Confusing. Says you're allowed to do something and then goes hard on you during crit. Opinionated about subject matter. Can be condescending if she doesn't like you, which is highly dependent on the nature of your work. Has good days and bad days and with those comes pretty bipolar sets of instructions and opinions.

Comment:

She is an awesome teacher. I had her for drawing and it was a great class. She very engaging, pretty helpful and knows what shes talking about but mostly she can explain it to first years lol. Something that most teachers lack. She gives very constructive feedback and praises you a lot when you do something good. Highly recommended.

Its been a year since ive been in Shelia's class and Im still thinking about the ideas and concepts she talked about in class. Her projects were fun and her comments REALLY helpful. She is full of ideas and at first seems alittle bit mean- or edgy- but is a lovely woman! She expects quite a bit but helps along the way.

She was one of my favourite teachers. She is very active with students and active in her own work. She challenges you more then most teachers but in a good way. I found her class changed the way I think the most. She makes you want to get involved!

An amazing teacher. It was only after leaving Sheila's class and continuing on through third year that I truly realized just how important she was to my development as an artist. She knows how to challenge both beginner & experienced drawers and most importantly, Sheila knows how to push experimentation.

Comment:

If you want to get better at being an artist, the last thing you need is critiques of mutual congratulations. Hall tell you want to do better, and encourages new things. She also asked what we wanted out of the class the first day, and ended up fulfilling the needs expressed. Great exercises and long nude studies, from a non-flaky instructor.

If your work sucks, she'll tell you, critically though, with suggestions. If you can follow instructions, take advice and have some skill you'll do fine. Frankly if you as an artist can't handle honesty then you're in the wrong field. She does play favourites but there's a reason.

Had her for Materials, Form and Space and Drawing II. During a crit, she asked me if I had ADD or fetal alchohol syndrome. Consdiering my mom died when I was 8 from breast cancer, I could not ask her. She has still not apologized and shows just how classless she is and how inept she is as an instuctor. Just avoid her if you can and play the game.

Sheila definitely plays favorites and if you're not on her good side, expect to struggle to get by. She's extremely ridged and narrow minded. At her worst, I've seen her shut down a student half way through their presentation, and sadly, the reasoning was clearly because of her own prejudices towards that student, and not the work itself.

S.Hall is an excellent teacher. She is straight forward, smart, and will not let you slide on your own ****. People don't like that. They want someone to sugar coat everything for them. Instead of getting defensive, listen to her critcism, she can really help.
