Comment:
Overall awful prof who left all the work to is inadequate TA's. Wrote 5 argument papers, each marked by a different TA, all with inconsistent comments. Example: 2 TA's said use novels win quotations, 3 said use in italics.... Also refuses regrades because he believes they are pity marks given out to whoever can make the TA's or him feel bad.

Comment:
The course load is heavy and attendance is mandatory, there are marked quizzes/written assignments given out every class. The lectures were at times interesting, but more often than not he would chat with the class or go off topic. I wouldn't personally take him again because I had to work really hard for a mediocre grade. Exams were fair enough.

Comment:
As mentioned below me, his course load is quite intense, not just in Old English. The readings, constant quizzes, and essays can become quite a chore, but they aren't impossible. His lecture material is trivial, as he honestly just enjoys rambling and creating discussion. Despite all this, his exams are fair for the most part, but thats it really.

Comment:
Dr. Powell as a person seems okay, but Old English is an impossibly hard class that I would not recommend for the smartest people to take. The work load is absolutely ridiculous and takes all your time from your other classes. Every day there is either homework, tests, or quizzes so you have to show up. He expects way too much from his students.

The quality of your writing is irrelevant, if he doesn't agree with your point of view, (political or otherwise), you won't get a good mark.

The best professor I've ever had! He is a wonderful speaker who is both passionate about his subject and teaching! I always learn in his classes. He is a fair marker, but you have to stay on your toes or else your marks might go down.

I was spoiled by the quality of his teaching. I haven't had a prof yet that was as interesting or hilarious as Powell. I could see how someone could dislike his personality, though. Assignments are very clearly organized (something I haven't found with other English profs). He has his TAs marking hard but fair.

I graduated three years ago and am still studying Chaucer in my spare time, just for fun, because of how much I enjoyed Powell's class. I took Chaucer and Old English with him in the same semester.

At first I was annoyed at how slowly he talks, but it turns out that this is NECESSARY. Seriously, pay attention. Besides that... he's a nice guy who likes to encourage discussion and who is eager to help! 4/5!

Wow!! What an amazing Professor! He keeps his lectures light and full of discussion, and encourages different points of view. He is a tough marker but if you're a serious student, it shouldn't be a problem. He is approachable and more than happy to help! This is my second class with him and I'm signed up for two more! Take his class!

The most recent 3 raves are clearly written by Powell himself. Pathetic. Don't get me started on why he blows.

AMAZING TEACHER! I absolutely love Dr. Powell. He is so understanding and loves his students. Love his sense of humor and want to take more of his classes. Doesn't feel like a lecture in class. Read the poems and stories for the exams though! He is a very fair marker

Well spoken, hilarious prof! I had him for my first ENGL. class at the university and I loved it! He is very interesting in lecture/discussion. I felt like I had learned a lot after every class. He outlines his expectations for papers and exams clearly. Loved him, can't wait to take another class with him.

He tries too hard to be cool and funny, and its not working, when he should be trying to teach. This is an important required course and I feel I learned nothing. A sad man.

His class was a nice introduction to my first English course! Loved attending every class because there was always casual and intelligent discussion, as well as constant middle-aged quips and dry humour from the proff. I am definitely excitedly looking forward to taking more English courses just because he's teaching them!
