Just awful. "Lectures" consist of her reading off of Microsoft Word documents verbatim or taking 20+ minutes tangents that are irrelevant to the class. Simply put, you will not learn in her class. Grading is alright, I guess. Make sure your phone is fully charged before class because you'll need it. Prepare to feel like your time was wasted.

Probably the most boring English professor I have ever had. You can tell she is knowledgeable but she really does not know how to put it into practice. Her class lectures consist of her talking forever with little to no class engagement. Her teaching methods are old and traditional. Oh yea she is also rude and needs to learn some manners.

Cons: Heavy Chinese accent, super boring class, no online communication skills (she doesn't post the grades on Titanium), old-fashioned teaching style, not an inspirational English professor (she didn't teach anything interesting or new in the class), waste a lot of the class time to read useless stuff Pros: She doesn't assign any in-class papers!

I get the feeling that Professor Shen cares, however there are too many negatives to recommend this course. Very difficult to understand, extremely boring lectures, and incorrectly "corrected" the grammar on my papers. I gained nothing positive from the course. The quality of her teaching just doesn't fit in with the rest of the department at CSUF.

She teaches you the small things like punctuations that will make your writing MUCH better and more professional. Yes she has accent, but she definitely knows what she's doing. She also wants feedback of how she's teaching. Grade is based on 4 essays, 1 bibliography, attendance & participation. Go to her office hours and ask questions!

This is my second time taking Professor Shen, and I would take her a third time in a heart beat! Dr. Shen has a heart of gold and she genuinely cares for her students. She is passionate about literature and reflects that in her lessons. You really have to do all of the reading and study guides prior to class because she's big on participation.

Despite being a Chinese immigrant, she has a better grasp of the English language than any other American-born English professor I know. She's a hard grader so I highly recommend doing the extra credit assignment. I've only received two Bs in my college career and one of them is from her. She does a lot though to make things easy.

Dr. Shen is a great professor. She makes the instructions on the midterm, essay, and final very clear and if you can cover everything the question, you're sure to get a good grade. All you have to do is read the short stories and poems, come to class and take notes to do well. Take her if you can.

This class, along with the readings, was pretty interesting. Professor Shen is really knowledgeable on the content of the stories and carries out great class discussions. The class is composed of two exams, one 5 to 6 page paper, and a short final. The exams were short answer questions that were not difficult but wish we had more time to finish.

Professor Shen is a knowledgeable and helpful professor. She knows her material real well and definitely puts a new perspective into reading literature. The only issue is her grading. She grades really tough and expects you to remember what she explains onto the midterm and finals. Overall, good teacher, but would not take again.

Professor Shen is a great professor. Her grading can be a little tough so make sure to study the material. Reading is a must in this class for she promotes class participation and may call on you to answer a question. Nevertheless Professor Shen places much enthusiasm into the class which makes the material interesting.

This class doubles up as an Asian Studies class. We spent more time learning about the history of Asian Americans than we spent on literature. A certain amount of history is necessary, it was too much. She said one book we covered was, "not very well written, but it gives you a great understanding of the Filipino experience in America."

This class was alright. Most of the material was pretty boring but some of it was fun. She gives a lot of room for discussion in class and she doesn't just lecture the entire time. It's not a hard class but it takes effort to read through the assigned readings. I'm just glad it's over.

This was the most boring class I have ever taken. She would mess up literature all the time and feed us wrong information. She tried to tell us that the Romantic Era had to do with romance. Hardly any notes to take. Talks about how we're English majors and we need to analyze texts, but summarizes the readings the whole time.

Although Dr. Shen is nice, that does not make her a good teacher. I do not pay to listen to a professor reminisce about her past life in China. She wasted hours of class doing this. Also, when homework is assigned it is supposed to be done at home and discussed in class, not done in class. I would not take her for anything again.

Dr. Shen is very smart, very funny, and very invested in her student's success. There is a lot of reading in Asian-American Lit, but she keeps the discussions interesting by her passion in the subject and her ability to bring out the text's meanings. Plus she's very easy to talk to. You have to work hard for an A, but I strongly recommend her.

I absolutely love this professor. It is true she has an accent, but who cares? The passion, intelligence and understanding are there, so she is a joy to learn from. I loved hearing her personal anecdotes about her own life. She was also a fair grader. This is one of those rare teachers that genuinely cares about her students' wellbeing.
