This was the WORST class I took at UNCW so far. He was very nice however he did not grade any of the papers only his TA would. She was very inconsistent in the way she would grade papers, and we never knew how we were given our grades. I would highly recommend that you never take this class.

Honestly, I loved having Dr. Chen because he was an amazing professor but the TA grades wayyyyy too harshly and was not fair since it was just an intro history class that most people take for university studies requirements. If you feel confident in your essay writing skills, take Chen's class. If not find another class to take..

Honestly, Professor Chen was by far the WORST professor I have ever taken at UNCW. The TA grades all the work, and they never give you any feedback on why you received the grade that you did. I would recommend finding a different class because this was a horrible, horrible, horrible class.

Just dont do it for the sake of ur GPA, hes a fine person but the TA is the worst and she grades all the assignments which is only 3 papers. This class was a huge mistake.

This is the most frustrating class I have taken at UNCW by far. The TA grades everything EXTREMELY harsh-success is unlikely. The lectures drag on and seem like they will never end. The notes do not help you on the exams, and your only other grades are 3 papers that are unlikely to do well on. If you are looking for an easy A, look somewhere else.

Dr. Chen's TA grades the papers (which is what most of the class grades consist of) extremely harsh. She nitpicks the papers way too hard and acts as if she is the professor. it is a history class, not an English class! The lectures are very boring and he moves way too fast and the lectures do not help much with the midterm. So, take good notes!

I loved Dr. Chen's class. There were only 3 papers, all of which were based on books and the only tests were the midterm and final. It is very lecture heavy but if you like history even the slightest bit you'll like this class. He is a great teacher, makes the information easy to understand and is very enthusiastic. My favorite teacher so far!

Dr. Chen is a wonderful teacher and really cares about what he teachers. He knows everything you need to know about global history and politics. The TA was a tough grader on the papers which brought my grade down, but he wants you to get something out of the class which is awesome. Lectures get some what boring, but our very informative.

Dr. Chen is an intelligent professor that knows his material. However his class can be dull and the powerpoint's can be confusing. Overall the class contains lots of material. The worst part of the class was the TA who was a tough grader. Mr. Chen is a nice man but that class is nothing special.

He was one of three professors who taught this class, each lecturing on different days and focusing on specific parts of the war. Days when he taught it was a fight to keep from falling asleep. Thick accent, which I'm fine with, but just very very very long and monotone. Undoubtedly an expert in his field, but not in even slightly lively lectures.

Dr. Chen seems like a really nice guy, but this was not my favorite class. The textbook is not necessary at all, but the novels are a must read for the papers you have to write. You will take an average of 2 or more pages of notes per class. Nice guy, but just an alright class.

I love Yixin Chen. He is so passionate about what he does! Yes, we do take pages of notes every class but I always walk out knowing that I learned something. I definitely recommend him if you like history and want to learn. His class is not hard but it is a lot of information. However, his sweet and encouraging personality makes it fun, I think!

He has a very thick accent and doesn't give you enough time to process what he said and write it down. He uses powerpoints but they are not detailed. Some are even just pictures and if you copy right from the powerpoints your notes get very unorganized. From what I could tell his teacher assistants did all of the grading.

As pointed out, it'll take a while to get used to his thick accent, but he's very nice and helpful. Great teacher; has no noticible bias and has a very logical organization to his lesson plans. I love history, and he's a better teacher than my final grade would suggest. I spent the semester distracted by a pretty girl.

the sweetest guy ever! willing to help, you really have to listen to him because he has an accent. Take notes and then refer back to the textbook to get a better understanding. -I learned that towards the end :(- other than that his class is not too hard. :)

Dr. Chen's lectures are EXTREMELY hard to follow even though he posts up his PowerPoints because he jst goes all over the place and his accent is not easy to understand, he only gives 2 exams and a few papers, but his TA grades them so IDK the grading scale DONT BUY THE TXTBOOK DO read the books he assigns,it helps with the essays you have to write

Just looking at him he seems harmless, but don't be fooled! His tests are all multiple choice but cover so much material and will only have 25 questions so it's hard to get an A if you don't know everything he talked about! Also, lots of essays, and only lets top 15% of class get A's, so write good papers! Don't buy the book, just go to class.

DO NOT TAKE HIM! he only gives 7 a's and 7's b and the rest get lower grades. his grading is unfair and the quizzes are not clarified!
