I would not recommend this professor at all. His assignment instructions were vaguely written and then he graded really hard even though he didn't give you a good idea of what he wanted you to do. His grading criteria were so subjective and based on his own opinions, so it was hard to please to get a good grade. Interesting class though.

An amazing professor with great passion for his subject. Not an easy course, but ask questions, do the reading, and show up awake and interested, and you should do OK.

Comment:

Very intelligent man! He will NOT give you answers, instead, he will prompt you to think about subjects and come to your own conclusions. He rewards subtlety and thoughtfulness. You don't have to get everything right all the time and you don't have to be 100% accurate to get a good grade, as long as you are a critical thinker and you work hard.

Personally, I love ZB. He does grade a bit harder than people would like, but he wants you to truly understand it. I remember in my intro class with him, the first time i messed up on the dates for an in-class essay he gave me a 98% because he could tell I understood the CONTEXT (very important to him) rather than just memorized the dates.

I think ZB is great. He expects you to know the information and it's not a cake walk, but he's funny, interesting, goes on tangents at the best times, and tells you exactly what you need to know for the test, if you just listen. Reading the book WILL make your grade better, but he tells you tons in lecture.

ZB was my favorite professor of the semester! Art history is a hard class no matter what, but ZB made it easy to understand. I've never had a teacher so knowledgable about what they're teaching. He gives you everything you need to know for the test, no surprises. If you study and actually try in this class, you will do fine. He's also funny!

This was this hardest class I have ever had at MSU and I've been going for three years. Dr. ZB is a very nice man (with a sexy accent) and will meet with you but he doesn't help at all. I studied my butt off and never seemed to do good enough. I'll never take him again and if I were you, I wouldn't either.

This teacher is one of the hardest I've ever taken, when it comes to tests and projects he is a perfectionist. This would be fine if he didn't get distracted every single class by something trivial and unrelated and speak on that subject for a large amount, When he isn't he is so boring you are lulled to sleep. Also a study guide would be nice.

ZB is amazing! He goes off on tangents, but is always interesting. He if you study everything he tells you you will do fine. I failed the first test and studied his way for the rest of the semester and came out with almost an A in the class.

ZB reguarly mocks students in class, leading to many an embarassing situation. He will answer most questions you have (probably ridicule you in the process) but his answers are often so vauge they are useless. He has no strict guideline for grading, therefor enabling the dummies to get the same grade as people who put a lot of effort into the class

zb's awesome. entertaining, informative and passionate. his accent is not thick. it's present, but he's really very clear. take him if you like the word "quintessential" and if you like cute older men.

Prof. Smetana teaches specific details of each artistic era/peice instead of asking you to memorize dates and etc. which is good. take notes on things as stated by ZB and not from the overhead slideshow. Study with flashcards. easy if you listen.

He is a wonderful teacher who focuses on concepts rather than memorization. He is entertaining and interesting. Tests are essay, so if you prefer mindless memorization, don't take him.
