Comment:

Barry is very unorganized. His expectations are not clear and when asked to clarify he is unable to. At times he would present conflicting information about a test subject or become confused about the info he was teaching. Tests and handouts were ridden with typos and worded in a confusing way when the material was simple but he is a nice guy.

I agree, he was disdainful towards me. I felt like he was undermining me at every turn in an effort to discourage me. He was also my assigned advisor. If you are an intelligent woman who knows it, doesn't care about his love of the grateful dead, and isn't afraid to show it. Don't take his class.

Comment:

Professor was very enthusiastic but at many times inaccurate. Very difficult to meet with outside of office hours. Often references outdated information. I looked into working in his lab but he has no recent publications to speak of. I would recommend talking the course with another professor if possible.

While Chernoff seems well intentioned for the most part, he's not very good at teaching. He is consistently contradicting himself in lectures and examinations. What he says one day as fact is treated a week later as outrageous. He's unreasonable at times. I would not recommend this professor for substantive, trustworthy learning.

It's obvious Barry cares about the environment and knows plenty about it, but organizes his lectures poorly. He is too PowerPoint happy and doesn't engage students in his lectures enough. The textbook is a joke, but the outside articles were very interesting. He isn't an easy grader, but he is open to discussing grades during his office hours.

Without a doubt, go to class. It can be a little dry sometimes, but Barry is a great guy and it'll make studying for exams a whole lot easier.

I found the class interesting for the most part. Occasionally it was boring because often all he did was read off his PowerPoint slides, but overall I think this is a reasonably easy way to get an NSM out of the way. Avoid buying the book at all costs-- doing the reading is totally unnecessary because all test material is from lectures.

this class is really, really, boring. i came into it thinking it would be an interesting and informative survey of environmental issues, but it was incredibly slow (while managing not to go into depth on ANYTHING). I don't think it was Chernoff's fault, it was just a waaay to big class, with far too broad a subject. avoid it unless you need it.

The only problem was that you didn't really need to attend the 9am lecture in order to do well on the tests, and he gave people even more incentive not to attend by posting the powerpoint of his entire lecture online after e

Barry Chernoff is a nice guy and a terrible teacher. his lectures are boring and simplistic. i feel like i'm taking seventh grade earth science. his focus sessions at the end of class are more interesting, but he stopped doing them halfway through the semester. i really don't like this class at all.

One of the nicest professors ever. Also one of the easiest. This class is very interesting, very little work, and very worth it especially for non-nms people trying to fulfill a requirement.
