Comment:
There are pop quizzes, tests, participation, and 2 papers (1 optional). If you don't understand a book after one read, it will tank your grade. Online seminars during quarantine made the class even more difficult. Our main way of communicating was through a shared google doc. Very high expectations for a Gen-Ed requirement.

Great guy, very funny and crazy in a good way! If you're sensitive to comments that aren't always pc you might not like his humor, but he obviously does not mean it offensively. Lots of reading and he likes to open the class to discussion -- quality participation isn't necessary as long as you show up to class. Uses his own textbook.

Comment:
Professor Filice is a good-humored but somewhat disorganized professor. Discussions can go on tangents like vegetarianism and ghosts, but he does make it clear in class what the most important points are. As long as you pay attention to what he highlights and spit it back to him with more insight, you'll do well on the test.

Comment:
Professor Filice grades his tests and papers completely arbitrarily and then does not even give you an explanation as to why he deducted points. He jokes around the entire class and does not care to actually teach you the material. He thinks he is the most brilliant man alive and you can tell by the way he carries himself. Do not take him ever.

Filice is a nice man but a poor professor. His lectures are all over the place and he grades his tests and papers extremely hard. If you want to have a life outside of class and still pass, don't choose Filice.

Class is very lax but don't let that fool you. When it comes to papers and tests, he is a very tough grader. There is a lot of readings but they are manageable and he likes to keep it interesting. Very nice and funny guy.

I actually liked Professor Filice. I found his Hum 1 class really challenging and the quizzes were pretty tough. He always told jokes in the beginning of class. Very opinionated about the bible and had to talk to him about points I lost over it. Interesting way of lecturing.

Tests are almost impossible- be ready to know every single detail of the assigned reading. Reading quizzes are specific- if you don't read you'll fail. It's like a Sunday school class outside of church- focuses solely on world religions (w/personal bias) but rarely speaks of contemporary issues. Wouldn't recommend.

I expected to enjoy his class (environmental ethics) much more than I did and do better grade-wise than I did. The readings aren't too bad but he gives near-daily reading quizzes that are kind of cryptic and only a few questions. Lots of discussion, although I don't think he kept track of attendance/participation very stringently.

Filice is such a great guy, he's hilarious. The class on the other hand he makes what should be an easy class, difficult to do well in. He assigns readings almost every day and the quizzes that he gives on them are tricky. The tests are half take home/half T/F which can also be difficult, don't count on getting over a 90 on those.

He uses all of the students as the audience of his comedy routine he calls a "class." Easy A, but it is absolutely not worth the the mind-numbing spectacle of pure nonsense that this class embodies. It's a shame because this class could have been so much more with a different teacher who can teach.

Class is SOLELY based on opinion! Trust me, that is an awful learning environment. The only good thing was you could literally sit there all semester, NEVER participate, and spit his own opinions back out at him on tests and get the easiest A you ever will since kindergarten. I laughed hysterically when he said the course was challenging.

Filice is a really bright, nice, and funny guy. Took this class because I couldn't get into anything else but I don't regret it. Only criticism is his test format: 60% writing, 40% True or False. I don't think it's fair that TF questions count so much compared to writing in a philosophy class, especially since they can be very hard and tricky.

Comment:
I took Filice for World Religions and Contemporary Issues but he focused on the world religions aspect and ignored contemporary issues. He gives quizzes almost every class. There are only 4 questions and they tend to be obscure trick questions. There are also only 3 essay-based tests and no extra credit so not a lot of time to improve your grade.

Filice is great! Challenging course that makes you think, but so worth it. There are short quizzes almost every class period based on the readings. His tests are a bit hard (they are all written), but not terrible if you study and are decent at writing. You can write an essay in place of a test (I did and got a good grade). Good class.

Professor Filice was great. He took the time to get to know the students in the class, and always had a joke to share. He was very knowledgeable about the material, and made what could have been a very boring class into something fun. I would definitely recommend taking HUM with this professor.

Professor Filice is one of the best professors I've had and definitely my favorite. He cares about his students and is able to create interest in the ideas that are discussed in class. He creates a comfortable atmosphere where students get to know each other and think out loud together. He's funny and one of the nicest people I know.

Comment:
Avoid him for any philosophy classes. His English is off and on his tests his wording isn't right. Thus you will get questions wrong. If you don't agree with him he won't give you a good grade even if you backup your beliefs with evidence and citations from the reading. He is a below average professor for Geneseo.
