Comment:
I was never confused at the end of class. Dr. Elzinga takes time to answer almost all questions and provide examples in many languages to help students understand the principles taught. His tests are remarkably straightforward; what's on the study guide is what's on the exam, and the exams are not written to trip students up. Very knowledgeable.

Overall, it's just okay. It's interesting at times, but class can be kind of boring. Make sure you memorize the IPA charts!

He's an amazing phonologist. He's very organized and unafraid to take some extra class time to explain concepts that any student doesn't understand. You may have to work a bit harder to know how to do the problems, but if you keep practicing, this class will be easy. I'd take it from him again.

Elzinga is very thorough and very nice. He explains concepts very well and he doesn't teach things that go over my head. Very easy to follow in class and he is welcome to questions. His tests aren't too bad as long as you show up to class and pay attention on how to solve problems. I'd recommend taking phonetics from him, super nice guy!

Dr. Elzinga is a great professor. He's very passionate about research but he also manages to be an excellent teacher as well. His lectures were always interesting and clear, and he's pretty funny if you get his sense of humor. Homework/tests weren't too difficult but his instructions weren't always easy to figure out so asking questions is a must.

A great teacher. Interesting lectures and projects that are fun and helpful in understanding the material. It is not a complete gimme of a class, but going to class and paying attention is enough to get by. Very Strongly Recommend taking him!

Comment:
I had Dr. Elzinga for Ling 330 and he was great. No such luck for 427! He is knowledgeable and is a good teacher but is VERY demanding in the Phonology/Morphology course; I thought I would die from the take-home tests (even though you could work in groups). He's funny but makes this class very challenging.

Dr. Elzinga is a fabulous linguistics professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and found it quite easy. Sometimes he would repeat things from our book, but other than that, he had good examples and explained things quite well.

Dr. Elzinga knows his stuff. This isn't my field of study, but his lectures are beneficial to anyone. What he teaches is very useful. He is thorough and makes sure that you understand the material. If you go to class and take notes, you won't have any trouble on the tests. He is very fair. Do the homework to better understand the subject matter.

Dr. Elzinga is an excellent professor. He has extremely organized, clear, interesting lectures. He makes his expectations perfectly clear, and doesn't demand too much. He really cares about the subject and he cares that you understand the material. He is open to questions and will slow down and re-explain things to make sure everyone understands.

His (more like his TA's) grading was arbitrary and he didn't care about the students. He does care about the material, however. If you're passionate about linguistics, this is a good course. If you're merely interested and care more about your GPA, avoid it.

He was my only organized professor last semester, and it was kind of a relief to go to his class where it was extremely clear what he wanted and how he taught. He has his funny moments, too. The work was enough but not an overload. Very good class and professor.

I loved this class! It is by far my favorite in the ling program thus far. Elzinga isn't afraid to slow down if you need it and will help you whenever you ask. The course work is completely applicable, no busy work and homework just once a week that honestly doesn't take that long. YOU ARE AWESOME ELZINGA! Take this class everyone!

Dr. Elzinga was a great teacher. The homework was hard, but only once a week. Everything, in class work, homework, exams, was done in groups. I felt like he actually cared how we could apply what we learned rather than memorizing facts.
