Comment:

Don King is an absolutely lovely man. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He is incredibly caring and loves to hear student's thoughts. The class was surprisingly fun because of him and because of the strange bond that all of the students formed through our collective anxiety. Also make sure to read the textbook for the tests. I didn't, oops :(

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the class and the links that he has in D2L. There is so much information in there but you have to find it. He basically tells you everything that you need to know in those links. Get an audience, make sure you give a speech, not read your speech to your audience. Pay attention to expectations at the beginning DO NOT Read your speeches. This seemed to be a pet peeve and he made allowances in the beginning but improvement does matter Fair grader Delayed feedback Feedback was helpful A lot of reading but everything you need is there He was great! I hate public speaking but I have to say that his class made a difference. I am glad that it was an online class as I am terrified of speaking in front of others. He gave good feedback and encouraged me and made me want to do better on each speech. This was not a hard class. The amount of time and effort will affect your grade.

Regardless of other reviews, I must say that this professor was wonderful during our class. He gives out a very clear syllabus. It tells you how many people that you MUST have for a speech. His feedback was very good, I learned a lot from him. I feel more confident in myself since taking his class.

His grading was all over the place. I had no idea what to expect when I submitted something. I made 100s and I made 25s. I didnt learn anything because I was not able to improve based on comments. The little feedback I received was unhelpful, sparse, and condescending/rude (when present). Contact with the professor was also hostile.

Choose any other professor if possible. Terrible prof. Absolutely no feedback to improve with. Terrible grader: will destroy grade for small/unimportant technicalities. Unclear criteria. Condescending. Requires far too many people for a reasonable audience, and will give you a C for anything less. Unprofessional.

I figured I would drop this class but I didn't. I have social anxiety. This class didn't take it away but it did help me manage it. I can now manage the anxiety and nervousness I get when talking to people in everyday life. BY FAR, this is the most helpful class I've ever taken and it's 100% due to Professor King having honed his craft.

Having dropped out of SPCH2100 twice before, I was dreading this class. However, Don did a fantastic job of making the assignments entertaining and allowed us to speak about topics that mattered to us. His grading was fairly relaxed. So long as you speak clearly and your speech has a general structure, you'll do fine.

Comment:

King is a rare breed of professor. He never uses boring power points or assigns busy work. Everything he does in class has a specific purpose. You will see a major improvement in your speaking skills after you take this class. I, like most, was completely dreading speech, but this class ended up being my favorite this semester. Highly recommend.

Makes a dreaded class fun. Went above and beyond to help me with a class that wasn't even his. If you put forth an effort you'll get an A. He really does help you to relax. Very clear on expectations. Great sense of humor.

By far the best speech teacher I have ever had. He really cares about his students, and prepares your for the future. He is clear on assignments and posts everything online. A fun class that really helps you with communication. If you are willing to put in effort he will see that and help you in any way. I can not say enough about prof. King.
