LOTS OF READING AND WRITING... this class is not a normal philosophy class, the environment was shaped in a way your thoughts are controlled. HARSH CRITICIZER and grader he expect you to write and think like him, your opinion don't matter. minimum of 7 pages reading for each class that is to be discussed during class meeting. woudn't recommend.

he really is terrible at giving grades. he will comment on your essays saying things aren't the way he wants them. he is really the worst teacher I've ever had. in order to pass his class, you have to agree with everything he says. there is a lot of paperwork which is so repetitive and exhausting. you can put so much effort into one essay and fail.

Comment:
Coleman doesn't follow the same path as other American Studies 101 professors. He picks his own curriculum which consists of you reading 2-3 decently long articles before each class. The class is a discussion class but your graded only on essays. I felt like this was a psychology class not AMST101.

Seemed totally awesome at the beginning, as time went on he got very narrow minded and left little to no class time for an actual discussion. He seems to have little faith in his students and is an extremely harsh grader if your views are not an exact copy of his. I really wanted to like him/the class. Unfortunately, I don't.

Comment:
At the beginning of the semester, it seemed he would be the best professor. However, as the year progressed he got more and more upset with everything the class did and his grading got harsher. He refused to look at things from a different point of view. Very narrow minded and kind of hypocritical.

Comment:
Coleman is an excellent professor. His lectures tend to be subtle - no ranting or pontificating, just his honest, informed views. Also, he evidently does not feel the need to pretend he knoes everything, though he is certainly knowledgable about what he teaches. He is not an extremely harsh grader, though the assignments are never easy.

Great teacher! Graded on a 4.0 scale so it was easy to get an C but a lot of hard work to get above that. All the work is just essays and he dropped the two lowest essays. If you ever the least bit confused ASK QUESTIONS.

If you are a philosophy major, I highly recommend Dr. Coleman. He is brilliant, kind, and engaging. His upper-level classes will almost certainly change the way you think about yourself and the world.

He helped me to rexamine my life, rethink my world and values, and ultimately achieve a higher standard of living. He's passionate about what he teaches, and very inspiring. He cares for his students and will help you to succeed both in his class and in life. Ask him about his taste in music. You gotta put in the effort in order to reap the rewards

Mr. Coleman an affable, ironic fellow who attended an excellent undergraduate institution. He is helpful above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak, and has even been known to provide needy graduate students with class materials in the 4 x 6 in. format. He is erudite yet clear, a combination not often found in this most egocentric profession

I found the same thing. I realized this on one of my last papers. I wrote my first sentence to his question, questioned my answer, answered my question and on and on until I finally came to the conclusion that the philosopher ended up with. I loved it. B+
