RUDE! I'm a music history major, and he very clearly implied that I was a waste of his time. You know, we have six or seven full-time music history faculty - we're not a waste of time! Avoid at all costs!

He is an incredible teacher! I can't even put into words how much I have learned from him. I don't know what anyone else on this website is talking about. Excellent Teacher with an incredible ability to analyze and describe music of all genres. He is extremely helpful, and a major impact on my development as a musician and person.

he loves barry manilow and shania twain. if you're not a "jazzer," (by the way, can you please stop calling us that, we don't appreciate the nickname) he will discriminate against you. awful professor. thank god i'm done with him.

Dean Flanagan is one of the worst teachers I have EVER had. He is completely unhelpful, biased, pretentious, and his grading methods are unfair. I have learned NOTHING in his class and I don't expect to learn anything the rest of this semester. He exemplifies almost all of the worst qualities that define the Boyer College of Music.

Although I felt like he brought his own musical preferences to the class, I found that if I worked hard I received the grade I deserved.

As much as Ed tries to appreciate things other than jazz, it is apparent he cares very little about anything after 1970 (barring his love of the foo fighters). History of Pop is still one of the best classes i've had, but the teacher could have been a little more sympathetic to other varieties.

I have recently been accepted to one of the best conservatories in the country. Flanagan wouldn't even give me 5 minutes of his time to listen to my music because he said i "would never be a real musician" HA! guess someone had their cards wrong

Sure, he comes off as gruff and is a tough teacher, but I've never met anyone who knows more about pop music and he can play the heck out a guitar. Who has time to be Mr. Smileyface Happyguy when there's a department to run? Rock on, man.

Ed really only cares about himself and has an extremely conservative taste in music. He is a pre-1965 jazz snob who conveyed anything after that as unimportant and can't talk about classical or rock intelligently though he tries.

Ed Flanagan is an incredibly skilled musician. His ability to draw analogies between the culinary arts, sports, and music are astounding and entertaining. He has been very helpful in my education.
