He had random assignments he would come up with throughout the semester, and he never made a description for them online. The due dates and assignment details were rarely clear. He didn't remind the class of these assignments either. Hard grader. Doesn't give much to prepare for exams, just told to study lecture notes. Nice and funny guy though.

Dr. Dursteler definitely knows what he's talking about and is super knowledgeable. His lectures can be a little dry, but as long as you take good notes and keep up on readings and assignments, the tests are a breeze.

He teaches history in a totally different way than I'd every experienced before. No date memorizing, not much name or place memorizing either. Instead, he taught and tested on overall concepts and themes. There's a lot of reading that I think really adds to the class, but if you just skim it you'll do okay (again, general themes and concepts).

Not boring or monotone. Spoke fluent Italian which was very beautiful to hear. A bit of a tough grader though, but he was so inspirational that I ended up enjoying the material rather than worrying about a grade. I've had a class from him before, and I ended up switching my major to History because of him. No textbook, interesting assigned readings

Wouldnt take again. He is kind of nice, but in a neighborly way - Im more interested in paying for a professor that is engaged in his work. Class was easy, but as others have said ... that wasnt enough. Not sure why he has a position at the university.

While so many history professors focus on exact dates, he focuses on the ideas that caused the events to happen. Tests were super easy. Only required us to skim read the books. Very helpful outside of class. Super interesting lectures and only tested on what he says in class.

Dry humor + Long, dry lectures - Minimal homework + No test reviews/study guides of any sort - Each test (3 total) worth 23%; grades quite hard - Tests on obscure details - Extra credit (5 pts) + Doesn't take attendance + 5 books (-), but allows you to skim + 100% on the tests possible if you make audio recordings of the lectures. :

Pro. Dursteler reads off his slides during the whole class with a little of class discussion. His powerpoints are pictures that relate to the lecture but you have to be paying attention for the entire class. Be ready to read the books he requires for class. No midterm or final with TAs or professor so get with a group

Tests are essays/short answer and based solely off lecture. Write down every word he says: his slides are pictures, there's no textbook no reviews, he tests on specific details he finds important and will knock you down for using facts off the internet. All of that said I slept through half the class and got an A ... so? It's hard but doable.

Honestly, I'm not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from: I thoroughly enjoyed taking Dr. Dursteler's class. His lectures were extremely interesting & inspiring, & his breadth of knowledge of history is clear from all the cool trivia he includes. The tests are all short answer though, & you read books from different time periods.

He's vague on what he tests on, he says to learn general concepts. He also doesn't have a study guide for the test. But he gives 4 1 page papers and random points aka in-class quizzes (easy). It's not hard to get a decent grade and he doesn't ask THAT much of you. Start a google doc & get a study group! He's easy vs other civ teachers. GO TO CLASS!

Boring lectures. Sits in front of class and reads notes off a paper. Slideshows don't have content, just pictures that rarely change. No textbook, so hard to review material and must make friend if you miss class. Says he tests on "important things" but when we ask specifically, he asks us what we think is important, no straight answer/studyguide.

Just avoid this guy. Take a different class for your GE. The class material is good but he is a super dry guy. He is extremely disorganized and expect you to know small details for the tests. Take a different class and don't make the mistake I did.

This would be a great class if we didn't have to take the tests. HINT: On the test, he says you don't need to know dates or details, but be SURE to know both. I like the class and the content, but the tests are impossible and there is no study guide. Take good notes and pay attention to every detail. This class is doable, but tricky.

Worst class I've ever taken. He will stand up, read his notes, and lecture for an hour and a half -- Only referring to two powerpoint slides. Doesn't use a textbook. His lectures are brutal. He just goes on and on, with the hopes that you pick out the important parts for his tests, which are completely free response. Great class...

This is one of the worst classes I have taken. His lectures are extremely dry and boring. You have to attend though, as the material for the test is only covered in class. He also gives random assignments in class. He is extremely disorganized. He is an easy grader, but that doesn't make up for his classes. I would take it from anyone else.

Disregard the other reviews! I don't know what people have against easy grading teachers, It helps me learn more. This class was very educationally enriching. I personally love history, and learned a lot from this class. Because of the nature of the class I was more able to focus on learning, and enjoying the material over stressing about grades.

Easy A, just read the book and plan on getting 90-100 percent on everything. Kinda cool professor, but not engaging at all.I ried to go to his office hours but he was always busy and not interested in helping a student who was already meeting the standards for an "A" even though I had deeper questions about the material. It was an okay experience.
