Comment:

Excellent class. This guy makes you think and makes you feel like you're actually in a college class. He challenges you and doesn't accept ho-hum from-the-book answers that are acceptable in other classes. The only students who don't do well in his classes are the lazy ones who aren't here to learn. Thanks, Dr. Benning!

Comment:

The best soul I have met so far. He gets me thinking about all the things I take for granted and would otherwise not care to think about. Gets us thinking about our awareness on the choices we have to do what we want. Learnt life lessons that I will forever carry with me. If you are a tough nut, take it! And allow changes to take place.

Comment:

A very interesting and thought provoking class. Every student should take this class. He tries to make you actually think about why you do what you do. He is rather opinionated, but he is just looking for somebody to stand up for an alternate opinion.

It was hilarious watching honors students who think they have all the answers be questioned. If you think you need to work on that, this class will be tough for you, and you should probably take it. This reshaped many choices I made the rest of college. If the words are coming out of your mouth, he will hold you responsible for them.

This class is totally discussion based, and something totally different from any class I've taken before. It's not hard to get an A, but if you really want to get something out of it go in with an open mind. Benning's great and this class really changed how I think about myself and the rest of the world.

Most of these reviews are unfair. It's heavily discussion-based on whatever topic comes up that day. The whole point is to really get you to think about things. He'll put you on the spot to justify your response, if you can't handle that don't bother taking the class. Coming from a student that thrives on structure, this was my fav class of the sem

This is a very strange class. All we do is discuss random things. This can be interesting and thought-provoking, but also frustrating, as Dr. Benning is definitely opinionated and not afraid to show it.

Easy A! He gives an A to all his students! He is a very nice guy, but if you want to learn anything about Psychology and need to take further courses, you won't learn anything! Its all discussion about our lives and relationships.

Professor Benning is possibly my favorite professor I've had at EC, it really forces you to think. The class is basically a large in class discussion, so if you enjoy talking and sharing ideas you'll love the class. If you need structure and assignments you won't like the class.

This class is easy, because it is self-graded. Class is all discussion with no structure. You won't learn much about psychology, but your thinking will change. He is very nice, for the most part, but can be a little insulting. I'd only recommend if you want an easy honors elective.

People have very different opinions about Dr. Benning. Personally, I hated this class at first because I wasn't learning anything. As the semester progressed, though, I started to understand his teaching style, and it's one of my favorite now. If you like structure, don't take it. If you're an Honors student in need of an elective, I recommend it.

I agree with the rating from 3/5/09--but he did change back to self-graded, so that's good. You'll have interesting conversations and your thinking will change, but he'll tear down everything you say. If you need this class as a prereq for another class, or don't want to be bored for a semester, take a different section.

Don't take this professor. His psychology class is frustrating and demoralizing. He will question absolutely everything you think you know, and whenever you speak up, he will make you look like an idiot. If you actually want something concrete to learn, this class will vex you to the point of tears. BTW, his classes are no longer self-graded.

Benning is very different. His PSYC class is self-graded, with no quizzes, tests, or papers. He just hopes that you'll participate. I would reccommend it. I had the honors class, but i've heard that the non-honored was better, b/c there is another prof who helps teach. He rips apart all of your ideas, so be prepared to be "shut down" a few times.

He's an amazing professor. All you do is sit around a table and talk about life. If you need to look at a syllabus to know what to do, don't take this class. He teaches you psychology using the real world as an example rather than theories from a book. There are no quizzes or exams, maybe one or two writing things. One of the best classes ever!

Professor Benning is amazing. His theory is that you cannot learn psychology just by learning terms and reading out of a book. So he asks questions and poses scenarios to get his students thinking. He doesn't expect you to have an answer to the questions he poses; he just wants you to think about it! He can act tough, but he cares, a lot.

This class changed my life. Dr. Benning likes to play devil's advocate, because it helps you figure out what you truly believe. This is my favorite class I have ever taken.

Benning is pretty much amazing! This class was basically 100% discussion, no tests or quizzes, though one or two very small writing things that I doubt he even looks at. The discussion was awesome; he's unclear at times, but that's only to get you to think hard. He seemed very much like a fatherly/grandfatherly figure :)
