I absolutely love studying music theory with him, and as a student who finds himself slacking, I just can't do that to Dr. Van Oyen. He will listen to you and I've never seen him upset. Class is a breeze in 101 if you have prior music theory knowledge, but I see other students struggle with the concepts and you can watch them improve overtime.

By golly! Dr. Van Oyen Is one of my favorite professors of all time. He is funny, kind, remarkably intelligent, and truly one of the most caring people I have ever met.

Dr. Van Oyen is the best professor/conductor I have met. I have played with plenty of conductors but I have never seen a man more passionate about music and everyone in band than Dr. Van Oyen. But do not be late to a performance, it ruins the integrity of the band.

This man deserves 6 stars. He is extremely kind, outgoing, and invested in every band he works with. He helped create the most beautiful band experience I've ever had--everyone is equal, everyone participates, everyone respects one another, and we make great music.

Dr Van Oyen is the best professor I've ever had. The material is difficult but he explains it so well and has you practice it in class so much you will get it. He cares about his students. I highly recommend taking a class of his if you ever have the opportunity.

Dr. Van Oyen is genuinely one of the sweetest human beings on this planet, and he's a great teacher to boot. He's quirky and has so much knowledge, enthusiasm, & passion for music. Van Oyen is a beast. If you don't get something, he will help you get it. He also wakes you up by getting us off our feet to make us do problems ourselves on the board. There was also a high level of interaction with others in his classes. I got an A in his class no problem and I myself will admit that I am like a "C" student! Awesome teacher!!!

I have incredible respect for Dr. Van Oyen.This is my first year at NCC & when I walked in for my audition, he came up to me, shook my hand and smiled saying, "You know, I really don't like auditions, would you like to sit down and we can go through the music together?" He truly cares for his students and gives heartfelt motivational speeches.

This is my second year at NCC and I decided to get a music minor after going through an entire year involved with Concert Winds with Dr. Van Oyen. He is by far the best, most invested, kindest, most helpful, smartest, and inspiring professor I've ever had. Every moment around him is a lesson on how to be a better person. What a wonderful man.

The only reason that I am still at NCC is Dr. VanOyen. I came for Music Education, but when those plans fell through, I remained in the band. Because of his friendly smiles and persistance in going out of his way to talk to people, I stay because I feel at home. Yes, I could probably learn more at another school, but it just wouldn't be the same.
