I love Mark the Shark Sherman. I've taken 3 classes with him. He is a sweetheart. Sometimes he gets off topic during lectures, which I didn't mind, but you can tell he's really into it. Might be hard to focus if its a morning class because people tend to fall asleep. Good paper grader. If you like the subject matter you'll get more out of it

He's a great guy and all, but don't fall back on his assignments, you will fail. Make sure you catch up with all the reading otherwise you'll be oblivious with what goes on in class.

Mark is really nice! Although he made us read some really difficult 16th century literature, I learned a lot in class discussions.

Would not take his Class. Everything is so long and tedious and boring. Honestly did not learn much and it really hurt my GPA and I did try really hard.

Sherman loves to hear himself talk, and often gets sidetracked in doing so. Ask questions if you can get a word in. Get on his good side early-he definitely seems to grade with how much he likes you in mind. Sherman does put a lot of effort into commenting on essays though-email if you have questions and he generally gets back soon!

Comment:
Class is somewhat structured and true to the syllabus. However, there is no spark of interest the teacher initiates. The only reason I stuck to his lectures was that we were reading the Aeneid&the Inferno. He expects you to get what he says; does not fully elaborate his historically contextual comments. Very monotonous and boring lectures.

Mark is very funny and really really nice. He does expect people to know history stuff that they probably won't (but he explains everything anyways so it's not too bad). the discussions in his class are very sophisticated, but he's very relaxed and accommodating. Great class, i would take another with him any time

Mark sherman is a nice person but i don't understand anything he says in class. he always assumes that you know what he's talking about . he talks about random stuff that is unrelated to the thing we are studying and has an unclear way of speaking. he doesn't complete one thought but stops and changes in the middle of his point.

this class crushed my spirit. he compleatly overwhelms students who dont have a previous knowledge of whatever genere he is teaching and makes horrable assumptions regarding the knowledge base of his students. his critiques are unclear and most often he will simply not accept an assignment if he finds it unsatisfactory and tell you to write it over again. in a word ... snotty!
