He's a nice funny guy but I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this class. His website and syllabus are not helpful.

I enjoyed Dr. Hakan's class. A lot of people don't like him because he doesn't fit the mold of what they're used to in a professor. If you can think critically and do work without having your handheld the whole way you'll do fine.

You would have to be a special kind of person to take Dr. Hakan. Little to no form of structure to his lecture. Class consist of open discussion about potential research. Repeats himself a lot 2 exams total 1 literary review paper 2 lab reports. You have to put in work outside of class to get a decent grade. I DO NOT recommend this professor EVER!!

After reading the reviews here and having no other option, I grit my teeth and took the class. I was prepared for the worst but it... wasnt bad at all. The test material is 80% stuff any psychology major shouldve learned in prior classes, the lab reports are the only effort-consuming part of the course. Would take again, not a difficult class.

Dr. Hakan is a good person and really cares about his students, but he is not the best professor though. He likes to go down rabbit trails and fails to stay on track a good bit of the time. He is not clear about what is expected on assignments/tests and more or less leaves you to figure things out on your own. Overall good guy, but average teacher.

Do not take PSY 355 with Hakan. He is so non-directive, that even he doesn't know what he wants from you. He assigns lab reports before teaching how to write them and constantly contradicts himself. Rubrics aren't a thing, the study guides are useless, and you spend 99% of class having discussion about current events that aren't relevant to class.

2 exams based on quizzes taken beforehand and gone over in class, 2 lab reports, and a lot of discussion-based lectures. Everyone whined about his grading and test difficulty but without much studying at all (but plenty of effort on lab reports), I easily made A's on lab reports and exams. If you like to skip class often, don't take this one.

Dr. Hakan is a wonderful, smart, and caring professor that has many interesting discussion. However, that is all what is really to it. All of his lecture slides are basically blank and the entire class revolves around one sided discussions and tangents. I am a student that requires structure, and this class has none of that. Do not take the class.

It takes a special kind of student to appreciate Dr. Hakan. He's a nice guy and you can tell he cares about his students, but if you're the type of student who thrives on structure don't bother with Hakan. His lectures are random at best and his assignments seem to pop up out of no where. Asks a lot of personal questions in class.

I took this class over the summer and loved it! Which says a lot because you're cramming a semester into one month. He has his own style of teaching which takes some adjusting to but overall I think he is very clear in what you need to know. He also had study guides that were VERY helpful.

Best teacher Ive had at UNCW. Fascinating class. Hes not that teacher that just reads the slides... the class is what you make it. Ask questions and be curious and excited and he is awesome and flexible about taking the class wherever it goes and in whatever direction you are interested.

I signed up for 495 with Hakan without really knowing what the course was, as it was the only thing i lacked for a neuroscience minor. Basically the course is discussion based and everyone comes up with a project to present to the class for a full lecture period. The project is daunting but he helps you through it and really does not nit pick you.

Dr. Hakan is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. I heard negative things & can see why people might not like his style of teaching, but that is only if you're not passionate about Psychology. He's very interesting and loves to talk about anything/everything. Super open, down to earth, and easy to talk to. The class lacked structure.

First off, I would not recommend Hakan for 355. The material is REALLY dry and he doesn't help. However, if you do get stuck with him do yourself a favor and FILL OUT HIS STUDY GUIDES WHILE YOU'RE IN CLASS. He posts them before the course even starts on his class page. You'll get the essential info and pay way more attention to what he's saying.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. He rambles in lectures, you will be bored the entire time. He doesn't give out a syllabus with dates on it, he tells you when your assignments are due in class. Tests are HARD and grading criteria is not listed so you'll always be confused as to what he expects. We only have 6 graded assignments so there is no room for error.

Taking this class was like being given half of a 1000 piece puzzle and being told to solve the whole thing. No guidance. No outline. Some lectures were ok. But overall it was a nightmare.

I took Hakan for my independent study/ and was part of his research lab. He is a brilliant man and loves working with students on new ideas and new research. He treats his students as intellectuals which is awesome and he helps prepare his students for graduate school. Take him any chance you get, you won't regret it. Also, super down to earth

If you aren't good with science related classes, I wouldn't recommend taking 256 with him. He is VERY nice and will meet in his office to go over things, but he doesn't simplify any information to make it understandable and his power points don't help. Quizzes and exams are random so you have to write down every single thing he says.

Dr. Hakan is a great guy but he doesn't know how to dumb down the material, and that makes is very hard to understand what to study. The material is difficult, and it doesn't help that the professor sits the entire class and hits next on the powerpoint. Tests are taken from things said in class. If you can't teach yourself, I wouldn't recommend it
