Comment:

Professor Wathen is very knowledgable in what he teaches, there is no denying that. With that being said if you are having trouble understanding he (in my experience) is useless. If you ask a question he makes you feel stupid for asking it. He's not a very approachable guy. He also works very fast and can be hard to keep up and understand.

Comment:

Does not explain the information clearly before trying to teach. Just throws things up on the board and makes you feel dumb when asking questions or what it stands for. Blames students and says we aren't trying hard enough when the class average is low. He seems like a great guy but just an awful professor.

He really does not give a lot of homework. The projects are fairly simple. If you actually put a little effort into studying and paying attention there is no reason why this is not an easy A. I have never heard somebody fail this class with him teaching.

Dr. Wathen's class is difficult. He expects a lot from his students and you aren't always sure what's going on. With that being said, he was one of my favorites. He really cares about his students and life after college. I learned a lot in this class that has real world application. Just do your work and you'll be fine. I would take him again.

Absolute worst teacher I have encountered. He teaches his own way and doesn't even explain his methods. Does nothing but talk about nonsense in class. What he writes on the board is unreadable and doesn't translate to notes. I have tried to meet with him personally for help and that didn't do anything. The fact that this man is employed is crazy.

Horrible teacher, hate him with a passion. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Doesnt know how to teach, no powerpoints, lecture only. Impossible to take notes. Very unorganized witjh his lectures.

He is fair for the must part. He assigns a lot of work. He gives extra credit but you might need it. He does not always explain things well enough and expects you to know how to apply what you learned. Also, he assigns too much work and he is very picky about the wording you choose on exams. Also, he does not directly answer questions.

Dr. Wathen is fair. You have to study a lot for the tests. Very intelligent but doesn't realize that his students are not as smart as him, so he's terrible at presenting the material in a way that's easy to understand. He does give opportunities for extra credit to improve your grade.

I struggled with this class. If you don't go in the first day with the mindset to do hard work, you will fall behind FAST and it will not be easy to catch up. He is incredibly intelligent but sometimes the class gets confusing. Go see him after class or during office hours for help. The final was very difficult.

First, I will start with his class is difficult, the assignments take time. But if you do ask him, he will help you any way possible, so I recommend asking questions in and out of class. He is a very intelligent professor, and knows the information that he is telling you. But come to class and pay close attention.

Disagree with previous comments. He is a great professor, explains material very good, but expects a lot at the same time. Pay attention to his lectures, to every word he says, it'll help you on test. Tests & projects are difficult, but not impossible. Gives extra credit, requires reading outside of class. Advice - learn the course model by heart!

Sam is a really biased grader. You can do extremely well on all the test and projects and still not get an A in the class. Even if you completely understand the material you might not answer a question *exactly* how he wants it and he will still fail you for that assignment.

His class was very difficult but if you show interest and attend class he will help you tremendously. If you take five minutes to speak with him outside of class, he will help you and makes the assignments so much easier. He is a very caring professor and one of the most intelligent at Coastal. Take his class if you're a diligent student.
