Comment:
Based on discussion, can be boring at a lot of points. No tests or quizzes, just essays and participation. No explanation for essays, other than what he tells you on syllabus day and what is written on the syllabus. Pretty meh class.

This class was very discussion based, so be ready to to participate in class, as class participation is worth 20% of your grade. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't show up to class it will obviously hurt your participation grade. There is A LOT of reading for this class but only essays, no tests. Prof. Atkins' class is pretty enjoyble

Comment:
This class is largely discussion based, so be prepard to talk a lot! In order to do this, you must read most of the readings-and there are A LOT. Too much, in my opinion. He gives you absolutely no review or help before the exams or essays, which scared me at first, but he is a relatively easy grader, so as long as you attend class, you'll be fine.

A lot of reading! But then again it's history. He tended to focus on Japan and other culture's historiography, which is cool, depending on you're interest. I would recommend him but you had better do your share of the work.

Dr. Atkins is not only a great professor, but he is also very caring. He's offered me help not only in his class, but in another project I am working on that strongly relates to his subject. Beyond being an excellent professor, he's a brilliant researcher, with very interesting topics of study.

He assumes that everyone in the class already has vast knowledge of Japan before entering the class. He doesn't give you any idea of what is on the midterm and leaves a blank slate for the papers. His lectures are not well organized and contain minimal notes for studying. Participating in his class requres you to talk to the back of students heads.

He doesn't take attendance, but he does random quizzes on the reading that you can't make up. Just go to class and do the reading. The only thing that kept me from and A was the quizzes I missed or did poorly on from not reading the homework. He's willing to meet with and help you with the papers too, or anything else for that matter. Good prof!

You can probably ignore ratings from 100 level classes - they're mostly likely not history majors, and don't know what the discipline entails. An excellent teacher - and when you look at my ratings fro him, remember; easy does not mean good, it means you didn't learn.

Lots of reading, but when I did it, the quizzes were a snap. Class time was entirely discussion based; we had no tests at all, and only 2 papers. He also offered extra credit for papers based on guest speakers... exactly like what you have to do for your COMS 100 class. ;)

OMG, I hated his class. Wanted you to read about 100+ pages for each lecture. Pop quizzes like twice a week on those readings, 2 papers that determined your grade...which were impossible to write. He talked way to much and has a weird smile. DO NOT take this class. I failed...you prolly will too....

WAY too much reading. No tests but LOTS of pop quizzes that were too hard. Two big papers. Ended up getting a C in the class and I worked my @ss off on that final paper. Very disapointed. :(

He is a great prof. He really knows how to make the class interesting and get students involved in a good way. There is a lot of reading, but as long as you do that, you will ace the midterm and final, and there are 2 papers which were more fun to write than most. Not an easy class, but worth it.

No tests, just pop quizzes on readings...good and bad aspects to that because some readings are long & sometimes there's just not time for reading it all.
