He is amazing in every way!! He is the reason why I am a history major. He is patient and takes the time to help me on every single paper. DO not believe the negative feedback. some people do not know a quality professor if it hit them in the face. TAKE CONLAN!!

There's a lot of material but it's not difficult. He knows his stuff and expects you to keep up, but is extremely friendly and helpful if you approach him outside of class. Great discussions and overall fair grader.

Comment:

Great guy, super nice, and he knows everything there is to know about Japanese history. He assigns WAY too much reading, but if you skim it (there's no way you can read all of it) you'll still be fine. This guy definitely taught me how to write papers, and I'm an English major.

A great guy. Very knowledgable and clear about assignments and material. Assigns gratuitious amounts of readings that sometimes don't have to do with the class. Grades papers strictly but fairly. If you take any Asian studies class, take him.

Comment:

Hard grader, lots of reading, classes that were, on occasion, boring. With that said, most classes were awesome, I learned a lot, but most importantly, Conlan is one of the smartest and kindest professors at Bowdoin. Only time I can recall enjoying having my papers torn to shreds. And you even learn to appreciate his shameless use of puns.

Fantastic Professor. He is incredibly helpful, but a really hard paper grader. Class can seem long but it is informative, clear, and well directed throughout. Conlan is one of my favorite professors at Bowdoin.

I too am shocked anyone had anything bad to say about Prof. Conlan. He is one of the mose genuine and kind people I have met at Bowdoin. Of all the professors I have had, hes one of the one I will definitely keep in touch with post-graduation. I would recommend any of his classes to my friends. His courses are not easy, but definitely rewarding in what you learn.

I am shocked at the negative feedback for Conlan. He is a sweet and intelligent professor, and anything but harsh or mean. His course is well structured, and he is great at leading discussions. He extremely knowledgable and class is relaxed yet lively. Overall one of the better professors at B.

Incredibly hard--but rewarding--course. If you have no previous knowledge of Japanese Culture than you're in for total infusion. Totally changes your perceptions of society and its tenets. The man is an open source of knowledge on Japan.

I am impressed by his commitment to teaching and his enthusiasm for his field of study. Although his courses are demanding, the work you do will not be in vain. I learned an incredible amount about Japanese history in only one semester. Overall, he is a great professor.

Professor Conlan is FANTASTIC, and neither takes pleasure in failing students nor condescends to them. He truly loves Japanese history and teaches his students everything he knows. He will also help your writing tremendously.

He's the biggest jerk on campus. Condescending and not helpful. Finds joy in failing students for stupid reasons. The worst professor at Bowdoin by far. Boring and mean and sadistic. I dislike him both as a professor and as a person.

He's a funny teacher, and a really nice guy. He gives a lot of pretty boring reading, but you don't really have to do all of it. Take this course if you want to improve your paper writing-- there isn't much work, but he grades it pretty hard.
