His exams are really difficult. Instead of focusing on what he teaches, focus on how the material can be applied in real life. His exam questions deal with design and intuition. Really, they're so simple they're difficult actually. You'll see what I mean. Please ask questions. He has a passion for teaching and doesn't mind when someone asks one.

McGinn is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. The man's a genius and old school. The class is structured to be unforgiving, but if you do every assignment, study for every exam and go to every class, you'll pass. That being said, I really enjoyed myself, even as an ME student.

Probably the absolute best teacher at NIU. He spells out the material so clearly and teaches you everything you need to know. His notes are great and he seems to actually enjoy his job unlike most teachers.

McGinn really knows his stuff, and will teach you everything you need to know in class (no textbook needed except hw problems). He reads you the exam early, and the tests are open notes (so work out problems ahead of time); but they are much harder than the other class section, and a true test of your comprehension and application. Funny guy too.

What makes a superior teacher? Well first, one must be engaged and interested, and second, the teacher must challenge the students to learn. Problem is, most engineering students don't know that they really don't want to be engineers. Take a McGinn class, and this should clarify things. Challenge the remedial, and see their true colors.

Had him from 210, 370, 461 471, 474, 475. He is the reason I am an engineer and have a true interest in the field. The best professor I ever had. Highly recommed him if you want to be an engineer. His classes are extremely fun, and exams are super hard and will rip you a new one if you BS him. Plus he taught our class to fly a Helicoptor.

Exams are tough even though he reads them to you the class before the exam. Best teacher I've ever had though. He makes want to come to class because he is funny in interesting. I saw him break a kid's cell phone because it rang during class so make sure yours is off.

Interesting comments about Dr. McGinn. I had him for several classes at the Univerity of Tulsa. He truly is a genius. He would take the 1st 15 minutes of my Electronics class to re-teach the Signals class we sat in for the previous period. He did this cold. His tests are incredibily difficult and require you to think. Best Professor I ever had.

The best teacher I have had in my life. He tells it like it is. If he makes a comment about you that bothers you... sorry, it is most likely the truth, so get mad at yourself. I have thought about switching from ME just so I could have the opportunity to take him again. Be professional, do what you know is expected, and you will be fine.
