Comment:
Alan Petigny sadly passed away in September but I was fortuante enough to take one of his AMH classes on the sexual revolution. He was a wonderful story teller and kept the excitement level up in the class. He was also known as the absent minded professor because he would forget your papers and would go off on tangents but really awesome guy.

pretty easy class, gets way off track though, maybe got to half the syllabus. 2 book reviews graded easily, weekly papers that slow down as the semester goes, lots of material on ppt=lots of notes-not available online, knows his stuff, easy going, basically need to go over notes a lot, gives notice for quizzes and 5 min before to cram. participate.

Not too hard of a class, random quizzes that he usually gives warning for. Midterm and paper weren't too bad. Final was tough, he basically wanted you to memorize everything we had learned in class, but do-able with studying.

Total grade is two 5-7 page book reviews on books that were awful, one essay mid-term, one essay final, weekly summaries that he seemed to give up on halfway through the semester, and participation. His lectures are good and interesting. The mid-term and final are hard and the books you have to read suck

Dr. Petigny is very boring and unorganized. He spends several weeks on some topics and barely skims the surface on others. Having had several classes on similar topics, I have plenty to compare him to and he is by far one of the worst history professors I have every had.

Comment:
I had Dr. Petigny for "Race and Gender After WWII"". The class was good, except that it was not what the class was supposed to be. We went over things that we shouldn't have gone over because of the topic of the class, and we didn't cover enough of some things we did need to cover. Great professor, very funny. Lost my paper, but whatever.

Petigny assigns book reviews on material he has written papers on already, so search Project Muse for a blueprint to what he wants. He's a great speaker and communicates the material well. However, he's far too willing to play "devil's advocate" on clear-cut issues, like the Red Scare, the Civil Rights Act, and Algerian Independence. Disturbing!

Good things about the class: Midterm and final are easy and even tho he gave out 2 pop quizzes everyone failed them so he didn't even count them. Interesting lecture and I got an A with effort. Bad things: 1 pg paper (singlespaced) every week, 2 boring novel reports (5-7 pgs), and no Gordon words. We spent 3 weeks on civil rights and skipped WWII

The class isn't that difficult, just read and take notes, and do the homework which are only page long weekly summaries (on 15-20 page chapters(very simple). You can get a B in the class without much effort if you just do the work, an A is possible if you put a little extra effort. Overall class isn't bad, not much work, and kinda interesting.

Dr.Petigny is a nice man, and tries to crack jokes once in a while, which shows that he tries to get along with his students and actually wants the students to do well. His lectures seemed long, but was VERY helpful. A lot of papers, but do-able, except the readings were a bit boring. The class was okay overall.

It's an average class. He doesn't take attendence in lecture but it counts for section. Two 5-7 page papers, which an A is almost impossible to get on them, and weekly response papers on the chapter from the textbook- which are easy. It's possible to get a B, an A is pretty hard.

Interesting class. One-page weekly summaries... doable in 30mins. 2 book reviews and 2 exams. Extended deadline for both book reviews. Very nice and likes to spit some quirky comments once in awhile.

If I had to choose between taking his classe or dropping out of college I would be flipping burgers by the end of the week. His class was heavy in readings and weekly papers...the focus of the course is SUPPOSED to be a research paper but he wouldn't talk about it until midterm and he never let up on the stupid weekly readings and book reviews!

I think he is a great teacher! Go to class is a must. Make sure you do all the work including extra credit, take good notes. He usually tells you when there is a quiz. COME TO CLASS. Its very interesting. Overall he is a nice guy. The TA sucks for his discussion, make sure you get him as your discussion teacher!

US Social Movements 1945 - 1975; Dr. Petigny has interesting lectures, and he is excited about what he teaches. This class is the only course in my college career where I did not miss a day.

As other students have mentioned, Professor Petigny is somewhat disorganized at times. This shouldn't scare you away from his class. His lectures are very interesting, and you can tell that he enjoys his subjects. The reading material is usually pretty good with very good course pack selections. Stay caught up, or the pop quizzes will get you!

One of the best teachers I ever had in my life inside and outside of the classroom. If you sppend the time to get to know him he is inspiring and endearing. He has a unique teaching style that seems to have no rhyme or reason but it works. Very smart and very helpful.

I love the subject material and his class was pretty interesting. Very important to go to class and take notes. If you do that, the pop quizzes (he usually announces that he is giving them) and tests should be a breeze.
