Comment:
David is smart & witty in the old fashion way. This does not mean he is outdated, but means that his words needs to be translated into a modern fashion. The comments he makes and the suggestions he gives are great. However you must know how to translate them in your own words to fully accept the feedback. If not, you'll end up in the angry comments

I love David. He is witty, inspiring, helpful and hilarious. Taking his class would really push you to think more. Don't be easily offended only because he has a stylistic preference and always be straight forward. It seems that there are some stereotypes in the department about David that cause some misunderstanding. Don't judge him. He is great.

David Porter is an embarrassment to RISD, he does not inspire good student work or creativity but rather focuses on personally attacking students or shaming students. He really doesn't belong at such a wonderful school.

Worst experience I've ever had with a professor. He would often bash students rather than help them develop their work. He seems to only care about a specific genre of work. If yours isn't that, you're gonna have a rough time in crit. Fights for the last word, rambles for hours, patronizing, inappropriate, uncomfortable class, avoid at all costs.

If you can get out of David Porter's Visual Thinking class, do it. His crits are unintelligible, rambling, and patronizing, and he makes the entire class so uncomfortable that no one ever talks but him. There has not been a single class where he hasn't said something insensitive, including holocaust and rape jokes. Not remotely worth it.

Emphasis on photo editing and design. ALWAYS be witty, NEVER be cute. He flat out dislikes the technically unskilled students. Debate is futile. By the end I knew what to make to satisfy David, but I wouldn't call that personal growth. I recommend making work for yourself. You'll get "bad" crits, but he'll respect you and you'll respect yourself.

Dave is smart and witty. He comes off as off-putting due to references to racism+sexuality that more often than not, anger students. However, he is never making a personal attack (tho many interpret it this way) but rather he talks about these things bc a piece calls attention to those subjects and he is addressing the illustration itself.

Comment:
David porter is basically the worst teacher I have ever had. Misogynistic, arrogant, bad taste in art (he showed us examples from DEVIANTART for crying out loud!), no concern for students whatsoever. Unless you want to spend your artistic career making tacky ads and memes, anything he says will be irrelevant... Get out of his class if you can.

David Porter is hilarious. Yes, a bit pompous, yes, a bit long winded, but you'll laugh through the whole semester. The only thing he cares about is the idea behind you work, which is great mental exercise and really improves your work. His class is totally worth it, but if you can't take a joke you won't be happy.

Porter is hilarious! Incredibly pompous, and arrogant.. I appreciated his crits, and analysis in the propaganda course. I feel like the course was advanced theory, and useful to my art on a whole. Dont expect him to notice you as a student tho, he is too busy proving his intellect is superior to yours!

Took Illust II with him. He is the most arrogant professor I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. He thinks he's so smart, and he's out to prove it, if he has to do it over your dead body. I got sick and tired of him trying to prove how witty he is by trashing student projects forever, w/o doing constructive criticism. Hate him, hate him forever.

Porter is a toughie. Picture Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester from M*A*S*H, and you're getting close. His opinions are strongly rooted, buI don't think he had much respect for me at first, though after dilligence I seemed to warm him over. It's a completely different though process compared to most illus classes, which I think is good for balance. Unfortunately, it's not an entriely realistic approach to illsutration, rarely are we given tht kind of editorial freedom. Good exercise for the brian, though

Porter loves himself so much critique was almost like watching him jerk off in class. He loves his image, his crits are predictable and boring - and the main point is proving how witty he is - Once - he said an illustration was more like a poem than a st

He drags critiques out FOREVER just to hear himself talk. He also made a couple of **** comments and when one girl came to class looking really unwell and said that she had been so sick she was literally dying he laughed in her face. Other than that... great.
