Comment:

It was an interesting class. If you have a photographic memory and can memorize the entire textbook and know trivia from personal studies and are lucky you might feel confident that you will get an A. I possessed none of the above qualities and still received an "A." So if you take his class don't stress and do the work. It will work out fine.

Comment:

Doten's class is difficult to say the least. No lectures or class notes, just assigned readings. He may test you on the book, or he may test you on his musings he thinks are important (which of course he never tells you.) Grades way too difficultly. Takes more points off for wrong answers than awards for right ones. Avoid, for your sake.

Comment:

Best teacher I've had. Gives students tools for learning that are vital in the rest of our careers as students. DISCUSSES the topics with us and encourages us to deeply analyze and question the material. Tells us things we need to hear. Critiques us constructively. Do something good for yourself and take his class.Put in effort and you'll do well.

Doten is a great teacher, and its REALLY easy to get an A in the class if you just try. So long as you come to class with the readings done and you answer his questions, you'll be golden. Just don't go into his class thinking he's going to be telling you stories and you get an A for being there. Also! ALWAYS do the extra credit he offers. Its easy.

This class was so painful, I'm sorry to say. I love the subject and the textbook, but this teacher, while being a nice man, and very knowledgeable, is a horrible teacher. Doesn't really give lectures, just tries to force the students to talk about what they didn't read in the book. Absurdly hard grader and difficult tests. Excruciating.

Want to go into a class excited to learn Mythology and come to the end of the semester being told how 'unteachable' the students are? If you want a professor who will not just give you your grade but hand the class insults along with the papers, then this is your guy. If he dislikes 'current students' so much, maybe it's retirement time?

Hi all I took this class about 11 years ago and looking back Mr. Doten was an awesome teacher! He is challenging, but thats what you want when your are studying. Relatively more difficult than profs at SMC. Readings are highly important. Class is spent mostly on "pulling" the information out of you. Not shy about scolding you for not information. You only need to attend class to know what stories will be on the test. Definitions, IDs on exams are not difficult, but sophisticated essay questions.

Really liked him when I took him in Fall of 07. Challenging, but always witty and entertaining. Just make sure that you're clear about your final prospectus project's intent and you'll do fine. It's helpful if you engage in conversation with him during breaks and after class.

VERY intimidating at first. I almost dropped the class thinking it would be way too hard, but the subject matter kept me in. I'm glad I stayed. You can learn a lot from him. LISTEN, READ, PARTICIPATE! Do the work, earn the grade, simple as that. I am getting an "A" and I recommend doing the show & tells, easy points!

I've probably just flunked his first quiz but I think he's interesting, kind and charming. The material is fascinating and the show and tells are fun but .....his exams are only one hour with way too many questions alotted for the time available. Hopefully I will nail it next time :)

If you are part of the scholars program and are an English major this is the class for you. He demands a lot and REALLY grades hard and exhausts you, yet in a good way. Smart guy too. He's back from retirement so he really cares. I got two Fs and a B and recieved a C. awesome teacher. awesome class.

If you want to be a scholar, an academic, if you want to work hard, if you want to master the English language...you'll love Doten. Advice: Do the readings over and over and over. He's all about RESPECT, a gentleman, so ask questions, participate, do the show & tell, MEMORIZE THE PICTURES (I cannot stress this enough), do not be late to class.

hes pretty hardcore espically for a community college professor, but if you think you can handle a UC definitely will want this class. Not an easy A, unless your English is profficent and perfect. For me that is not the case. He gives 3 exams and 10 commentaries due by the 10th week and final. not for fun, class is about academic work.

Professor Doten asks for perfection when all he can deliver is mediocrity. Abundant in condescending statements, this class entails a senile, impatient, and self-absorbed teacher. I, by the way, am only a quarter through the semester!

Professor Doten knows his stuff. If you want to learn and want your writing to improve take this class! This is the kind of prof. that can take you to new levels. Lectures are challenging to get through, but the assignments will force you to grow as a writer and critical thinker. Visit him in office hrs, he's resourceful & appreciates students.

Awful, awful, awful proffessor. Egotistic and condescending. So self-absorbed in his own knowledge that he forgets to teach the class. Constantly asks questions, that are unrelated, expecting his students to know the answers. Seems to enjoy humiliating his students by going over test errors in class. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
