Comment:
Don't take Texas Crossroads. It's a waste of time with too much reading, too many written assignments, and too much watching videos and talking about nothing in class for it to count for anything. There's no tests and you learn jack squat about Texas literature or history. A nice guy but his class is pointless. You'll walk away with nothing.

Dr. Young has been one of the most influential professors I've had. He made me feel secure in my major by pushing me to do my best. You will definitely read a lot, but he really engages you. He's always willing to offer feedback and give support. I've taken him for two semesters, and I'm registering for a third. Take him!!

Comment:
This is a literature class, so obviously be prepared to read, and not just the stories. Dr. Young is a big fan of the introductions and author backgrounds and how they relate to the stories. He does throw random pop quizzes which are usually gimmes if you've done the reading or if people aren't showing up for class.

Dr. Young is great. I took several of his classes while I was at Sam. He is very friendly and personal with his students, but don't mistake his kindness for weakness because he doesn't have patience when it comes to students who don't read before class. Just have your act together and you'll enjoy his class. Take him!

Head and shoulders above nearly any other professor I've ever had. His class was the one I looked forward to and was actually excited to go to. Great sense of humor, a real passion for what he's teaching, and engaging, fun discussions. Just don't think you can skip the reading. He will catch you.

Prof. Young is one of the best profs I've ever had. The assignments given are very useful for the future since it deals with the technical side of writing from a business/management side of things. I would suggest Gene to anybody needing any English class he teaches!!! GREAT PROF and GREAT GUY!!

WAY too much reading. Reading assignments every class period. I'm an English major and he gave me my first C on a paper. It was going to happen sooner or later...guess I'm just a little bitter. But he's an OK guy. You must love the book, All the Pretty Horses because he is obsessed with it. That book didn't exactly turn me on.

I have sent this teacher several amiable emails over the summer and he has failed to return any one of them. I am taking a correspondence class 200 miles away from this college and I don't have the luxury of seeing him when I want. How am I supposed to do well in this course if he can't answer my questions through email.

This professor is totally unreasonable. I have just turned in the first two assingments for his corr class and he has returned them back to me as unacceptable. I have 10 more assignments to turn in over the semester and he has made it difficult to expect a good grade for the rest of the semester. He may be a nice teacher and good man but he is a

A genuinely nice person and an amazing professor. I took him for lit. classes and a secondary teaching course. Expresses high expectations so you apply yourself, but he must grade based on effort, because everyone comes out ahead. Encouraged me to become an English major and go to law school. Maybe the best teacher I've ever had. No, definitely.
