Beecher is an awesome professor that is very knowledgeable. One paper, one final, both are very fair and straightforward with a lot of options. A lot of reading, but it?s well worth the effort. Attendance and quizzes in section count. Lectures are old-school, just talk, no slides, no notes later. Pay attention, you just might learn something.

Great professor! He really knows his material and is passionate about the subject. Go to lecture, he covers a lot and is interesting, and at least skim the readings, and you will be fine. I would highly recommend him!

I didn't find it that interesting or go to class much after a whiel, but I thought he was likable and pretty clear. But an hour and forty-five minutes is just too much lecturing. If you're very interested in what he's teaching though, I would say go for it. Grades on essays and tests seem to depend entirely on the TA's, but mine was an easy grader.

Beecher is a little hard to understand and the class covers a lot of information. If you keep up on all of the reading you'll do fine. He doesn't really tell you what to study so make sure you have a good TA. The class was really good and its not too hard but has quite a bit of reading.

Beecher is legit! His classes are what UCSC was supposed to be like. More intense than a normal class but without tests and quizzes. It's a much better way to learn and you as a student are treated more professionally. The downside of that is, don't try to procrastinate in his class or it could end tragically.

Professor Beecher is an engaging and interesting lecturer. There is a lot of reading but you can get away with skipping or skimming a lot of it. One Term Paper and one Final. The final was easy to study for if you took good notes in class. The Term Paper required that bring in information from various readings.

I absolutely adore Professor Beecher. I have taken 170A, 170B, and I'll be taking 178D next quarter. You'll work hard if you want an A if not I'm sure you could get away with not working that hard. He's amazing. His lectures are amazing. The readings can be hard and numerous, but they're good. He knows his stuff. Take his classes.

I really enjoyed Prof. Beecher lectures, they were well developed and interesting. Beecher painted a well-developed narrative utilizing various academics and historians to illustrate various theories. Grades were determined by a single essay and a final (to which no study guide was given). Also, Beecher was very approachable and kind.

I took this class last year and I was the notetaker for the class, so that means I went to every single class and paid attention - and I have to say I loved this prof! I think you do have to be a history major to truly appreciate him, but he lectures like a storyteller and is very vivid with his descriptions. He's very approachable as well. :)

A kindly, caring professor with a passion for and understanding of both his subject and his profession. If you're into history, and truly want to understand--this is where you go. A credit to this university, and I would say pretty much every university.
