Yamamoto is amazing! I appreciated the high expectations he set for the class. He is disciplined and expects the same from his students. He uses a repetitive technique to teach the code and its application. If you do the work, by the end of the class you'll know it, because he has repeatedly showed you how to analyze the code. SIMPLY AWESOME

Comment:
Took Prof. Yamamoto in Malta for Comparative Tax. Overwhelming at first, but once you understand his class style, you catch on. Heavy reading, so be prepared for that. Follow the syllabus. The section codes for that day are exactly what will be discussed, so if you don't know the answer to something, chances are it's one of those. Tough exam.

Completely unbiased review since I don't know my grade yet: No laptops allowed. Fast Paced environment. The class is heavy on code law, rarely had to recite on cases. DO NOT rely on the "tax bible" outline. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS! DO NOT BE LATE. Tab your code book early, practice practice practice! VERY PAINFUL, BUT YOU WILL LEARN!

If you get Yamamoto for tax, despite the horror stories, you should count yourself lucky. You will do most of the hard work well before finals. It will hurt but by the end you will be able to work with a code book comfortably. Don't be unprepared. Just don't. Expect LOTS of study time. Suck it up, you are in law school. Final was not too bad.

Recitation is from row-to-row. Recitation include cases and problems (and sometime general questions such as "where is gross income defined?"). He goes through the problems step by step and that is how he asks his questions. Read the TAX BIBLE. Think as to how you will be able to use ONLY your code book to answer questions. Very funny guy!

The best professors I have ever had. He is certainly not easy, but if you are prepared you can do fine. His way of explaining the tax code is detailed and much needed for a complicated subject. Adv Tax is a smaller class, so you will be called on multiple times for each class, so preparation is a MUST! Easily accessible for help outside of class.

He's a good prof, knows the subject in & out, & his teaching style is clear. He's a little bit too fast at times (doesn't give you time to digest). You know when you'll be up for the most part b/c he goes down the rows. Test was very fair. From class, you'd expect it to me impossible but it isn't. I made an A despite being confused 90% of the time

His policy on no laptops is not so absurd as you work your way through the material. He is very to the point about students being in law school.. when he says YOUR IN LAW SCHOOL...what do you expect..he's hard becasue the material is that hard...very good about giving help when you ask...be prepared and if your not well you have been warned...

Great prof, very cool. No BS personality but not an ****. He is a master of the art of teaching. Nicknamed "The Samurai" because if u r obviously unprepared, he will chop u up. Teaching style makes you understand the material, not just memorize it. He teaches u how to read code, highly applicable for any class/lawyer. U will learn from him.

Great. He's HARD on you if you don't prepare, trust me, he can tell. Yams teaches you how to read the code. If you can read Tax Code, all other code will read like a children's book. If you want to learn something that will be useful for your other classes, take Yams. The guy is actually really nice and it's fun watching him pick on the unprepared

By far the worst professor that I have ever taken. Knows tax, but he is NOT a good teacher. Tries to intimidate and is demeaning to students, treats students unequally, and is overall not an effective teacher at all. I would NOT recommend this professor unless you are a tax accountant with prior knowlege of the subject AND plan to practice tax law.

Not a very nice guy. Some people like him, others don't. Sucks the class is mandatory since there really is not a lot of use for the information you learn in his class. Especially how far in depth he goes. Take a different professor if you can, unless you want to do tax work during your career.

The hardest class ever. Now that it's not mandatory, do not take it unless you LOVE tax work. Difference between Prof.'s is ridiculous. I could ace any other Tax Prof's final after Y, but instead got his. Test hardness/fairness depends ENTIRELY on how he likes the class, and a few bad apples can spoil everything for everyone.

O.K., you know what, I so don't agree with the person who says he's hard on people who "Just don't get it"... that's bull. I spent days trying to figure out IRC 1(h)... the most worthless piece of doggerel I've ever read. When he called on me and told him that I was nothing but confused about this garbage, he was cool. Is he tough??? Heck yea.

If you came to Law school to develop the greatest tool - a sharp mind - take this professor. The main thing is to show him that you are putting an honest, good faith effort. I took him for 2 classes. Through his high standards I learned what I am capable of and if I can finish strong in this class I know I can be a great attorney. He will push you.

If you are going to practice tax law, you need to take Prof. Yamamoto. He shows you the ins and outs of the various IRC sections. He is a stickler for attendance and runs a tight class. I would recommmend him to anyone who wants to learn the code.

Yams is a good prof in the sense that he really teaches you HOW to read the federal income tax code. That being said he takes the class way to seriously and will lay into you if you're not prepared, or even if you just don't get it. Expect 4-5 hours of homework for every class. Recitation is HARD and FAST. You will recite at least once a week.

He is hard. He will give you nightmares if you are nervous. Prepare and do your best. The only problem I had was that for the number of questions on the bar (maybe 2) his class was waaay too much. Our class had his first multiple choice final. Tricky! Did well. To study, spent 2 days in the library. Read the entire book again. Worked every problem
