Comment:

Outstanding teacher, in the purest sense. I had Dr. Dumenil for 2 classes while she taught at Whitman. She and Lionel Jensen are the 2 best teachers I ever had. Crystal clear. Did not allow us to do "our best" but demanded real quality and challenged us to continually dig deeper, broadening our perspective, in search of the complexity that is.

Comment:

Professor Dumenil is incredibly passionate and educated in 20th century women's history and she does a fantastic job in explaining the basics to students. Not necessarily the easiest class if you are not interested in history, but I would definitely recommend Dumenil as a professor!

The class is very interesting, but I only recommend it for students highly interested in history and not looking for an easy class. Dumenil is really intimidating, making it hard to seek help.

Had her for CSP of WWII on the american homefront. Very hard grader, demands a lot, but still a good teacher. Take her class, but is a challenge but very worth it

Very intelligent lady, articulate, organized, very good class even though the topic is somewhat repetitive. she pulls from a variety of sources, is very funny and overall an excellent teacher. take her classes and you will learn about whatever class it is!

Prof. Dumenil is really sharp. Her class was pretty difficult though. Be prepared for a lot of reading (which you must keep up with) and a significant but not overwhelming number of assignments (a couple tests, papers, and a bit of group work) spaced evenly. And be ready to participate in class! And you'll learn a ton, and that's what counts, no?

Horrible teacher. Very unorganized and unclear. Interestingly, she does expect you to be clear and grades very harshly. I don't know how she came to be the chair of the department because I don't think she's the most qualified.

Prof. Dumenil has been the most helpful prof I've had at Oxy. She can be intimidating in the beginning, but she really cares about her students. Go to her office hours a lot. Her classes are SO interesting, but can be very difficult if you're not a strong writer (something she expects). She assigns a lot of reading, but you learn a LOT.

I really liked Dumenile. i learned so much in her class, and her lectures were clear and oragnized. She doesn't give that much work, but the work she gives she grades very hard on. I think many people found the class boring because she lecutre for the entire hour and a half, but if you sit in the front row and stay engaged that class is terrific.

I admit Dumenil can be terrifying, but if you give her a chance she is actually very helpful and caring.Her classes are hard only because she wants you to try and get something out of them. She is extremely knowledgeable which can be intimidating, but also very helpful.She also appreciates people who put forth an effort, as opposed to slackers.

This teacher is horrible. I would not reccomend taking her, unless you are telepathic. Otherwise, you have no clue what she wants in her assignments. She does not use constructive criticism, she just makes you feel bad about your writing. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!

Only had her for upper division, & she was one of my favs. Extremely knowledgeable & fascinating person. Give her a chance; she's nice. HARD class, but learned more than ever. I most appreciated her excellent teaching. She never wasted our time & encouraged us to share our research.

I really liked her, but she definitely picks favorites. Be sure to talk in the class and go to her office hours.She grades easier if she likes you and likes you to back up her beliefs, but i found the class very worthwhile.

Dumenil is a good teacher but she does play favorites. Sit in front and talk and don't show up late. If you're not willing to do those, don't bother taking the class because she won't know you exist. She is a good teacher and I recommend the course

I thought Dumenil was a good professor. She knows her stuff and is engaging if you participate. She is very liberal, but is more than willing to listen and engage in conservative viewpoints if you are articulate and know what you are talking about.
