First day I was supposed to have had half the Iliad read. I considered dropping it because I didnt want to read a 700 page book in a week. Im so glad I did not. Just listening to Bove speak will double your intelligence over the course of a semester. The class had like 6 people which allowed us to have solid conversations. Only 3 assignments.

Bove is one of the best lecturers I have met at the university. He is incredible at what he does. His experience in the field revolutionizes your experience with the texts. I highly recommend taking a class with him, but know that he is harsh outside of class. He will obliterate your paper.

"I love teaching." No you don't, Paul. No. You love 1) a schedule of course texts for your own I-rememember-why-I'm-special re-reading. You love 2) a break built-in your week. & you love 3) to get to write "distinguished prof" next to your name on the flier for the course. Hoo hoo, you sold your soul. What would the Quran or Stevens or Adorno say?

Hes horrible. Hes so disheartening, I love English and he made me dread going to class every week. He grades not fairly at all and if you ask for help forget about it. Hes right you're wrong, thats basically all you need you know. No matter what you say, hes right.

Nearly left the major due to Bove. He is a difficult person to deal with. His academic style is from a generation ago -- and he can be condescending when you don't agree with him. His academic approach is what he calls postmodern, which means there is no absolute truth, etc. -- but in his realm he is the arbiter of absolute truth and knowledge.

Dr. Bove is possibly the most intelligent individual I have ever come across in my undergraduate career or otherwise. It is my goal in life to one day acquire half of the knowledge he has in his pinky. He is inspiring, and will make you surprise yourself with what you may know. He is never condescending and truly wants to communicate wisdom.

Comment:
Everyone who rated Paul Bove poorly is either totally uninterested in literature and/or a complete moron. His breadth of knowledge is astounding and he'll say more interesting things in a single class than many professors will all semester. He demands you put time and effort into your work. If you aren't willing to do that don't take his classes.

In 1995 I was in a UPMC cold study that meant I had to be in a hotel for a week with a rhinovirus & couldn't come to class. He was understanding about this, but not about my loathing for a certain theorist's fawning all over shiny simulacra. Simulacra suck and if you don't believe me try a cotton tomato, I said. B-, he said. Who's right? I'm right.

He's brilliant. Without question, he is the best teacher I have ever had. Do not take a class from him unless you are serious about the material. If you are, it will likely be one of the most rewarding classes you'll ever take.

Bove is an incredibly generous professor despite the demands of his own work. Appointments are necessary and worthwile. He takes his pedagogy seriously. Intellectual courage is well rewarded. The readings are much and tough, but discussion generally involves specific passages. A good guy to work with.

He doesn't give clear expectations for assignments. Doesn't allow any discussion, and lecture without any self-discipline. Avoid if possible. Also, he's decidedly not hot, and weirdly fixated on Lear.

come on! P. Bove is not hot. You were fooled by the sumptuous eyebrows. I'm trying to remember if *anyone* at Pitt is hot. ... Nnno, guess not. Not that I recall. I did like reading Edward Said, anyway. It was an interesting class. And Pitt itself is so lovely, it's ok that none of the profs is hot.
