Hands down my favorite class at the ILR School. Applegate is an excellent professor if you like historical analysis! I can see how the subject matter can be sort of boring but between the readings, you're bound to find something to spark your interest. Professor Applegate gets an A+ for both his teaching and his charming character. HIGHLY RECMD.

Applegate is well aware that subject matter is not the most exciting (for many students), but tries his best to get students engaged and is extremely clear/detailed. Beyond academics, he is authentic and compassionate. 3040 is reading/writing intensive course but def working taking for a history distribution.

His classes make a great choice for an ILR history elective. Grade was based on a short essay, prelim essay, and a final essay (all take home). His grading criteria is very clear and he explicitly lays out everything you need to do on the essays in order to do well on them. He also provides a lot of feedback on essays that I found helpful.

Professor Applegate is a must take professor for Labor History. Though the readings are "mandatory" you don't actually have to do them. If you read the chapters that the papers are on, then you can avoid thousands of pages of wasted time. Reasonable grader if you follow ALL instructions. Lectures are boring but often informative. Highly recommend.

Probably the most boring lecturer I have ever had. Otherwise, fair and interesting, but will make you work to get a good grade.

Comment:
Lectures were extremely dry and hard to get through for this course. The reading wasn't unbearable, but definitely a little on the tougher side. A nice course in the sense that it is a lift from the traditional "labor history" of the LR department but I thought it was challenging. Expectations on assignments were pretty vague.

Prof. Applegate is a great professor and genuinely cares about his students. His lectures, however, are very dry. Even as someone who has a big interest in labor unionshistory I found myself struggling to pay attention. Applegate's background and life story though is super interestinginspiring! I definitely suggest going to his office hours.

very good guy. means well and if you talk to him outside of class you realize the material is pretty interesting. Not bad workload and just overall good guy. One of the more reasonable and objective professors in ILR, which is a nice relief

Very nice guy, lectures can be boring sometimes, especially if you have done the reading. They tend to be long summaries. He does try very hard to give each student individual attention with their final papers and goes out of his way to be helpful

I hate to dis this guy because he's very caring and loves his students, but he's an incredibly boring speaker. Also, a****LOAD of reading to do, and even then it's tough to put together a compelling essay you're proud of given the weird material you have to draw from. If you like history/reading, though, it will not be that tough.

He is the one teacher that cares for the students and shows taht he does. His class is easy but you do have to do the readings becsue the essy questions aren't just about information but also partly on events that build up a feeling or a view comparing two groups. Great guy, funny out of class BEST!

He is very easy. He gives you the test questions a week ahead and all you have to do is memorize your answer. I did not attend half the lectures or read any of the books because a person from section writes a summary of the reading assignment weekly.

Unfortunately he's not related to Christina Applegate...that's false advertising with this last name. The class is easy but without stories about that fox, it's disappointing.

Applegate is a really great teacher. If you can handle the fact that he lectures the entire class and there is almost no participation, take him. He tells you everything you will ever need to know! And take home prelims!
