He claims that he is a tough grader and that his classes are hard and require loads of reading, but don't believe him-- so long as you do the work and go to class, you can expect a B. His classes are always fascinating and if you pay attention you will learn a lot. My only complaint is that the assignments can all be done without attending lectures

He was awesome. Tests were difficult, completely all essay, but a lot of it is graded based on length. As long as you can pull enough out of your head to meet the length requirement and its all somewhat relevant, you'll pass. Lectures are fantastic, if you miss them, you wont pass, but you dont want to miss them. He's an animated, engaging speaker.

He only had two tests which were pretty challenging (essay). It was way to hard for a 101 course. But I learned so much in his class, and his lectures are so interesting. But I worked hard for my B! If you really want to learn then take him, but if you are just taking this course because its required then don't take him.

After all my classes at VCU, he is 1 of 2 that I think were the best. The class was somewhat challenging but for good reason. He loves this subject and it shows in his teaching style. If you read the books and study hard for the test and but in the extra effort for the paper(based off the books), you will succeed. Absolutely a GREAT professor!!

I hate history, but after taking this class I absolutely love everything that I've learned. He loves what he teaches and makes everything interesting. His tests are extremely hard and you have to study a lot, but you leave feeling good about yourself and the stuff you learned. I'd take him again even with the hardness of his exams. Go to the study sessions!

Don't take this class unless you are a history major and/or really have a passion for history. Too difficult for a 100 level class. I loved his class though. He is an amazing teacher; one day I hope I can teach like he does after I graduate.

Auerback is awesome. He is hilarious, and relates to his students well by treating them like equals. (he's pretty young himself). His class is a little difficult, but only if you dont keep up with the reading. AND ITS ALOT OF READING!! Tests aren't too bad, but ask questions and go to the study sessions, they help a lot. He's cute too.

Dr. Auerbach is a extremly good prof, who makes everything he teaches interesting. However, his classes are hard! in my class we had to read 2chp of the txt, a 500 pg book and write a 4 to 6 pg paper in 2weeks! but I learned alot and I loved the class and the prof, so only take this prof if you really want to learn about history and go 2 class!

This guy is a complete crock. He has awesome lectures and seems really interested in the subject taught, but his exams and grading method are impossible. Grades WAY WAY WAY too harsh for a 102 class. I am a history major myself. He doesn't really care about students. So full of himself. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HIM, YOU WILL REGRET IT!

What can I say? One of my two favorite teachers at VCU (the other being Kneebone). Interesting, friendly, engaging, loves what he teaches. The classes are actually not that hard (101 was downright easy, 300+ moderate difficulty). Just pay attention. A LOT of reading, but it's interesting. Man, I really really miss taking his classes...

This guy is a total jerk but makes up for his harsh and unyielding method of grading/testing with his charming lectures. There is required reading on which you will quizzed on and only a midterm and final to makeup the overall grade. It could better if was not so overly-confident and always alluding to the Simpsons. Class isn't worth the work.

Provided that you do the readings and take the notes, the tests are not hard. The papers on the other hand are a bit tedious. All in all, not the easiest professor at VCU, but I'm getting a B in the class. Still, you can learn a lot from him. Very neat and funny, and knows what the heck he's talking about.

Not an easy 101 class. Great teacher VCU just makes history hard. He tells you at the beginning of class there is a 40% D,F, and dropout rate and a 5% A rate...not an easy class but a great teacher who is funny and tries to help you learn

If there was ever a GPA killer I'm willing to take again in an upper level class, it's Ar. I managed a B in the class, but missing a lecture was like missing an episode of a favorite TV show. A must have for VCU, I cannot speak better to his passion and personality.

Gives interesting lectures, and very energetic, which is good if you have him in the morning. Book (novels) quizzes are somewhat difficult, but he's not afraid to curve the grade if neceessary. As for exams, he gives you a study guide with every question he's going to ask. If you go to every class and are prepared, you'll get a good grade.
