Dr. McAleer was awesome! His exams were tough, it was multiple choice and essays for every exam, but he prepared you well for it, and you had the essay prompts in advance. He was a really great teacher, and he was SUPER funny. He really got you engaged with the material, and he covered everything that was going to be on the exam in class! Awesome!

This is the hardest class I have ever had to take in my entire life. Professor is really nice and cares about content but it makes absolutely no sense. I have read the entire book and spend hours daily on this class and still can barely pass anything. Do not take this class unless it is required for you.

Sean is a nice guy but it is very hard to succeed in this course. I attend all lectures, read, and take notes and still am struggling. Quiz and Exam questions are very wordy. Exams are worth 90% of your final grade and are NOT easy, no clear way to study as the notes are not organized well or clear to understand. Would not recommend.

Does not prepare you are quizzes and lecture is bland. He switches from powerpoint to book to whiteboard. NICE GUY, but the content is not engaging and the class difficulty is way harder than what it should be for a 100 level course. Content is very difficult to grasp amongst many of my peers within the course. Wouldn't recommend taking this course

good professor, great guy. His class made me think about ethical questions I never would have otherwise considered and my view changed to some degree on every topic we covered. you need to go to class and prepare for tests with the study guide, but the real key is to go to his office hours early and often. doing that will make the class awesome.

Sean was an amazing prof. Hes super funny & very relatable. He really knows the material and goes above and beyond to help you know it. Go to office hours and get outside help from him and youll be fine. His tests & quizzes are very hard, but the material is really really hard to begin with. Be ready to read and put in work, GO TO LECTURE

Sean is a great guy! He is super approachable. Ive only taken one class with him but he is a fairly hard grader but if you put the work and time in you should be fine. He is super personable which i really like in professors. his quizzes can be tough. i took notes during lectures and that helped a lot for quizzes on canvas, so take notes

Every lecture Sean does is extremely thought provoking and insightful. I notice people who commented on him below say hes a terribly hard grader, but honestly as long as you show up to class and don't miss anything you'll be fine. Be willing to put in the work and your grade will reflect that.

Anyone who says he's a tough grader has seemingly only had easy graders in the past and has never had to put in effort for a class before? He has review sessions before exams in addition to answering questions on D2L leading up to exams. Literally just read and show up to class. Ask questions. I've never had a teacher be so open to questions

My favorite Professor of my Freshman year, Great lectures, understanding, and an amazing teacher. I wish I could, take another class with him. To pass just read the 1 or 2 readings a week and take notes and you'll be fine. Super interesting topics and super thought provoking. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I had to spend hours a week on this class. You need to read A LOT, but even that won't prepare you for quizzes. He drops the lowest quiz score though. Really tough grader and likes to prove that he is smarter than you. I did enjoy some aspects of the class.

Professor McAleer is not an accessible professor unless you schedule meetings with him on office hours. He will contradict material in his lectures and then be upset with students for not doing the reading. However, the readings are hard enough to understand to begin with, and regardless of how closely you read it won't be good enough. DO NOT TAKE.

Sean keeps class interesting and engaging but he makes his quizzes nearly impossible to do well on. He asks trick questions to be uses as 'learning tools' but the quizzes still count as part of your over all grade. He finds places to take points off wherever possible on exams. Doesn't matter if you read everything, probably wont do very well.

He has a difficult time explaining material so that the rest of us can understand it. The grades are made up of quizzes and tests. The multiple choice questions are always worded weird and confusing. If you don't word essays EXACTLY like he would, he takes a ton of points off. He has a short temper and can be quite rude. Do not recommend this class

While McAleer tries to be funny and engaging, he neglects actually teaching the subject matter. The readings are incredibly hard to understand and when you ask questions he doesn't give a straight answer. He is the hardest grader I've ever encountered, and takes off for simple things like not leaving 'margins' on the sides of your essays on exams.

Sean is great and very passionate about philosophy. This class is super interesting, and he goes over everything that is going to be on the exams in class. He will go over things multiple times so you know the answer. Every exam has an essay and he grades pretty heavily on the essay section. There is a lot of reading, but he alsooooo goes over it

Honestly, Sean is great. Your success in the class is going to depend more on the subject material. Philosophy can be tricky, but if you want to succeed Sean is always broadcasting his office hours and is available to help you. I would say philosophy is not for everybody. At the very least, his lectures are interesting- he's a pretty funny guy.
