Comment:
Dr. Parker is clearly knowledgeable in his field, but his lectures tend to be dry and he often rambles. Study guides did not help for the exams, and there are two "not mandatory" field trips, (3 days, 2 nights & 1 full day) where the alternative option is to write a 30 page paper. There are also 2 page papers due almost every week.

Comment:
Dr. Parker is extremely intelligent and an amazing teacher. Class is only once a week for 3 hours but he gives you a 20 minute break in the middle. If you do the reading and participate in class you will have no problems. You have to get his supplemental book and you'll be fine. Every poli sci major should take a class by him.

It's a pretty interesting subject, and Dr. Parker clearly cares a lot about it. Lots of handouts. Of course, some of the stuff you've heard is true: You either go on a field trip to Zion National Park, or you write a door-stop of a research paper. However, he's a pretty easy grader so even that shouldn't be too much trouble. No laptops, by the way.

There are "teachers" and there are exorbiantly gifted brilliant scholars who probably don't hear it enough! If you are one of the few UNLV students that appreciate an impassioned and knowledegable beyond reason scholar teaching you things in an unbiased, logical manner, Dr. Parker will make ALL those dreams come true. Best classroom experience yet!

Very interesting character, very relatable and teaches a fairly cool class. However puts wayy to high of a percentage of your grade on attendance, tests can be long and include esoteric, vague questions. Overall a decent class

Great professor and great class. I actually learned something. The class is demanding and time-consuming; however, if you attend class must participate, do some of the readings, and watch the videos you will succeed. My advice is to overly participate the first few weeks, his first impression of you is what will make you or break you.

What an interesting character. Witty and knowledgeable on the subject. However, participation is 40% of the grade and his grading method is completely insane. The rule was if you don't speak in class you get a "D" for that day. When I talked in class I actually got lower grades (B) than when I didn't speak (usually an A). Makes no sense

DR. Parker is a great professor. He truly cares about the students. He is always willing to help when needed. He knows his stuff.I do have to agree the field trip is a little much to ask for some as it is quite a bit of $.However if you plan it out it can be affordable & it is a fun/interesting trip. The alternatives to the field trips are lengthy!

Great teacher, very interesting and passionate about the material. If you are interested in the material (The American Presidency), this is the guy to go to. He picked great material for the movies and reading. You also watch movies and do quizzes on them instead of a term paper, definitely a big plus in my book.

If you do not have the money to drive all around Utah, I would not take this professor. Either spend hundreds on field trips or right a thirty page term paper.

Im really torn on this professor, he was very nice, but at the same time semi rude, though i don't think that was his intention. 10% of the grade is based on participation, which is fine except for the fact every time i raised my hand to participate he never let me speak, thus i lost that 10% of my grade. ppl who just blurted stuff out got credit

How can anyone not rate Parker well? His lectures are interesting, and you can tell he loves to teach. Avoid this class if you are shy, participation is 50% of the grade.

Great subject taught. The participation in-class got to be way out of control! This caused students to repeat everything that was said, even if it was the last comment made, they felt they had to say something or they wouldn't receive credit...ridiculous! Tests were fair but require attention to detail. Overall, good professor

Best professor I've had at UNLV. His class isn't easy, but he is passionate about his subjects and enjoys his job. He is very helpful... just GO TO CLASS. He bases a lot of the grade on participation. I've had him for 3 classes and enjoyed all of them

A lot of the grade in this class is based on participation. The tests are very detail oriented. But this professor manages to take a subject that should be really fascinating and turned it into something lame. If you don't like to parrot facts, don't take his class.

GO TO CLASS! that is the mistake a lot of people make, they dont go to class, he writes almost everything on the bored that is on the tests so if you write that and study it reading the book should just be a recap, his class is easy if you pay attention but you have to earn the grade it doesnt just appear majically infront of you

Great professor. One of the best I've had at UNLV. Have taken both the pres and natural res pol classes and learned a great deal in both. He doesn't care if you disagree with him as long as you do so intelligently. He loves to assign out of class activities (movies and field trips) so if you don't have time for these, don't take his class.
