Thurman Barker is an angel. One of the kindest, most compassionate professors around. I take his class every semester because it's low pressure and I genuinely feel uplifted after being around him. The man has an incredible depth of jazz knowledge, with a passion for teaching and a heart of gold. He made my college experience.

He is a nice man and he loves Jazz. If you want to learn more about the history of jazz then take his class. Contrary to other comments, there is work to be done. There is a midterm quiz, presentation, concert review, short responses to readings, and a final oral exam. It is not a guaranteed A but an easy one if you put in some work.

you have to understand thurman and his role in music to really appreciate him as a professor. this man played with sam rivers for years, as well as cecil taylor and others. thurman is a legend in the avant-garde jazz scene and it makes sense why he was hired. listen to levels and degrees of light to see whats up w him

Jazz in Literature I : Thurman is great! He is an active musician and is super engaged in Jazz. His passion for music is very evident in his lectures. Very inspiring! I am a science major and have had no exposure to Jazz before. And I found this class highly informative and fun. Also, there is very little work in this class so it was easy!

He is hilarious and very entertaining. He always kept me awake and lively in his morning class. The topic is very interesting but the course is only a simple introduction to jazz and it's place in literature. It's not even really a lit class. I recommend!

TAKE JAZZ IN LITERATURE WITH HIM! I mean take it if you really want an easy grade, fun class and don't care at all about jazz or literature. Doesn't care if you attend class or not. I failed on my test and the day after he just solved it for me and gave me an A. Thurman, I love you!!!

The school hired this man to head its jazz program because its president hates jazz. He's a nice enough guy, and I don't blame him for taking the job, but I'm shocked he thought he was competent enough at imparting knowledge to students to even apply in the first place.
