Comment:
Doesn't teach, and bases his class on "self-taught" philosophy. Answers questions if you come in prepared with them, but you have to learn the material yourself first. Intentionally makes the course impossible. By far the worst professor I've ever had. If you can AVOID taking him- DO IT!

Comment:
One of the most challenging classes in the school, especially to CS beginners. If you do not keep up with the work and stay consistent, you will not make it. Even if you do, you still might not. But you are guaranteed to learn so many things and possibly the most important lesson of all: Self-studying is definitely hard but unbelievably essential

Professor Liew is one of the most effective professors at producing computer science majors that graduate. His class is the most difficult course I've taken, but he really taught me the fundamentals of succeeding in CS. They are: pain is temporary, self-taught is the only teaching style, a deadline is a deadline, and comments don't break the code.

Professor Liew definitely makes you work for us, but his class is what you put into it. He provides projects but its up to you and your group to add structure, organization and content into the final result.

He is a teacher who knows a good way to teach students computer science i.e. help them to learn how to learn. People complain that his class is hard, but if you really want to pursue CS, then being able to learn on your own is vital and he does it in a very good way. If you put in effort, he will like you. You will learn A LOT most effective class!

Honestly, professor Liew is among my favorite professors at Lafayette. When you do CS, you are expected to Google/search for outside help a lot constantly. The textbook is also readable, and if you are complaining, it's because you are not doing the work.

Comment:
It's very known about professor Liew that he simply does not teach. His lectures are just QA session where he would answer every question by "it's on the textbook". Professor Liew is very lazy, he does not prepare his lessons and most of the data/instructions you will get for the lab will be ambiguous. Exam questions and grading are very unclear.

Comment:
The lectures are basically no help, and you'll work harder on this class than all of your other classes put together. He's helpful if you go to him. But this class has left many students clinically depressed. Read the textbook because if you ask him a question all he'll say is "did you read the textbook?"

He does expect you to teach yourself the work and come in to get clarification, but once you figure out his thinking it isn't terrible. Make sure you ask specific questions, even working through the part that you're confused on. If you say you don't get the topic, he knows you aren't trying. Projects are pretty simple if you do the code & reports.

Took the second half of Intro to CS with CWL in 1995 at Rutgers - thought this gut was awesome. It was a long time ago, but he really stands out in my memory as a great instructor. Thought it was funny when he had to correct the TA who didn't know what he was talking about.

If you have to take CS 150 take it at a different college or wait until Professor Liew does not teach it. He does not teach his students he says that we have to learn on our own. His grading system is harsh and he does not help, when you ask him questions

This guy is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire college career. He has mood swings and doesn't teach anything other than brag about his achievements. We learned nothing. He also gets pissed totally randomly. Stay away from this guy as much as you can

The class overall was not good. ALthough I got close with my class, that was not due to Prof Liew's teaching prowess but the FYS program. You have to read 9 books, write too many essays that he grades way too harshly, and he is often unprepared for class. Try to switch out if you get this FYS.
