Comment:
Prof. carlstein is definitely not the most sympathetic professor I've had. He formats his class so that there are quizzes at the beginning and end, which I didn't feel was right. However, if you make an effort to master your excel worksheets and actually go to his office hours (not that many people do), then I believe this class is an easy A.

Dr Carlstein is a knowledgeable man and his teaching is actually thorough & logical. However, this class was mentally draining. He gave us tests TWICE per class, these high pressure tests are 50% of your final grade! He is also unapproachable, relates himself to God in every lecture and is not empathetic. He makes you WORK for it. Don't take!

Refuses to round your grade, even if you are .01% off; seems to have a god complex, relating himself to god in almost every lecture; no feedback on quizzes, homeworks, or exams leaving you wondering what the correct answer is and where you went wrong; 30% of the grade is based on timed entry quizzes and 20% on timed exit quizzes every lecture.

While Prof. Carlstein is knowledgeable and a clear lecturer, the structure of the course makes the learning process unnecessarily difficult. The class has no defined structure for missed notes and 50% of the grade is based on timed, 2-3 question daily quizzes. Take another professor for a more traditional and enjoyable learning experience.

The BEST professor at UNC. The man is so passionate, so articulate, and teaches so well! I'm a stats major because of him, and looked forward to taking his classes all throughout undergrad. He genuinely cares about your learning. Math Stat is also his area of expertise, and you'll get so much out of the class. Don't miss out.

Carlstein is THE best statistics professor I've ever had. He explains the content in the most understandable way. He is passionate, impeccably prepared for lectures, and really wants students to deeply understand the material. That being said, if you're not willing to put in the work to truly understand, you will struggle.

Stats isn't hard and should make sense. Tet I ended up leaving this class with little to no understanding of statistical concepts because I was way too focused on knowing how to solve homework problems via my Excel sheet. Bottom line: do NOT take Carlstein if you 1. wanna learn applicable statistics and 2. hate 2 timed quizzes EVERY SINGLE CLASS.

I did not like the way this class was taught. We discussed different statistical distributions (uniform, triangular, etc.) for half the semester, and as a result barely touched on topics like p-values, and did not even cover t-tests (which is why I took the class).

I hated his entrance and exit quizzes. They gave me anxiety. That being said, he is totally worth it. I don't know any other professor that explains THAT well. My tips are to do the excel sheet based on the homework for the entrance quizzes, and do the excel sheet during class for the exit one ( he says that you shouldn't but you totally should)

Lol no. Whoever said he was accessible out of class must have gotten lucky. He was not welcoming to meeting outside of his office hours if they conflicted with your schedule. There's entrance and exit quizzes EVERY class, 10 minutes and 5 minutes respectively. If you don't work well under pressure, don't take this class, because he won't care.

Truly a wonderful professor. Very accessible outside of class. Keep up with your excel sheet and you will be fine! I cannot recommend him enough: he is very willing to offer help, examples make sense, kind. He makes statistics make sense! Wonderful professor!

This class itself is not hard, but he gives entrance and exit quizzes each class that are worth a total of 50% of your grade. They are timed and you only get 1 attempt at the questions. When I had a final exam conflict he refused to work with me to find another time that I could take it and I had to move around several of my exams as a result.

The most kind, patient, and available professor I have had at UNC. More than willing to help out and explain concepts. The class is based on Excel so as long as you are keeping your Excel sheets updated, then it is very easy to do well on assignments. I highly recommend Dr. Carlstein! He is so great!

Professor Carlstein is leaps and bounds the best professor that I've had at UNC. The course is designed to get at the real core of statistics that make the other courses in the major make so much more sense. He uses an ancient textbook that he will tell you not to buy. So, make sure to go to class. Can't recommend him enough.

2 timed quizzes a day end up being 55% of your total grade - these quizzes are basically impossible to finish in the amount of time given, and he said right off the bat that the average grade for these is 75% every year. Yes, 75 for 55% of your grade. If you aren't proficient in excel, take another prof b/c the class relies heavily on it.

Perhaps the best professor I've had at Carolina and definitely the best in the STOR dep. His lectures were always well done and you can tell he really cares about how well the students grasp the material. The class was hard but interesting and I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a good grad level course.

Best Prof in the STOR department and maybe best Prof in my collegiate career. Cares deeply about people actually learning the material. Difficult class without a doubt but if you put in the effort you will be rewarded greatly in understanding statistics in a way no other prof here can give you. Wish all Professors were as good as Dr. C.

Professor Carlstein is one of the best professors I have ever had - he is incredibly knowledgable and explains complex topics in ways that are clear and easier to understand. You will learn a lot about Excel in this class, which is really useful. If you make your excel sheets before each class, come to class, and do the HW you will be good!!!!

carlstein is a great professor. very knowledgeable about the subject. quizzes are stressful but aren't too bad. i will say he is pretty strict and wouldn't even round my grade .02 points for an A but overall i would recommend him! go to office hours and you'll be fine

Carlstein is one of the best prof's I've had at UNC. He is great at explaining topics and the class set-up really forces you to actually learn and keep up with the material. The entrance/exit quizzes are daunting at first, but they get better if you prepare well for them (review HW before and keep up with Excel sheet). Definitely recommend Ed.
