Professor Atkinson is amazing! One of my favorite professors. She is respectful of students and provides great feedback. The class is conducted in a group workshop and discussion format. Be prepared to read your work out loud. Homework every week + readings. One final "exam". Take her!!! You won't regret it!

Comment:

Definitely one of the most caring, educated, and helpful professors in the English department. She assigns readings and then creates weekly challenges based on those readings, which helps with understanding the many types of poems. Great feedback, and also great discussions in class (sometimes not even related to poems lol). 100% recommend!

I love this prof. She's a wonderful teacher full of valuable knowledge and cares about making sure you understand the material. She gives fantastic feedback. Not too much work, but you do have to do it or you won't pass. I learned a lot and my writing definitely improved.

I love Prof. Atkinson! She gives you lots of room to work on your writing, and gives helpful and critical feedback. She is nice, soft-spoken, and assigns writing that is very interesting and fun to do; Would definitely take her again for any reason!

She is one of the greats in the Creative Writing community at Mason so I would definitely recommend taking her at least once. If you show up to class, write poems, and stay on track, she will really respect you and your work. She also offers good advice and humor.

I enjoyed taking her classes. I like the way she reads poems. For workshop she is generous and kind in her comments but always provide honest feedback. I think she is a great for a more sensitive student. She is not strict. Lots of room to pursue your own reading and writing interests. She is quite funny too sometimes.

I don't know how anyone could say one mean thing about this teacher. She is wonderful! I took creative writing with her this summer and I loved every minute of class. She is very kind and helpful. But you need to go to class and you need to do the work she assigns.

Awful professor. Plays favorites, if she doesn't like you she's unwilling to help. Assignments were BS, wasn't sympathetic about anything, treated some students like they were stupid. Absolutely terrible. Don't take this class if you can avoid it!

I took Prof Atkinson's creative writing class during the summer as one of my last classes before I graduated. It was extremely enjoyable. She's an excellent professor -- very open, very specific in her feedback, and very supportive. All the good things you look for in a creative writing professor.

Excellent professor. Fun in class activities. There were tests, but we knew exactly what to expect. Any questions about syllabus or unclarity she will graciously explain. I took a one month summer course which was a lot of work (reading and writing), but by far my favorite class. I became a better writer while enjoying it.

Awesome teacher. Im not that into poetry but she helped me find a new appreciation. There are papers due every week but theyre only 1-2 pgs and fairly simple. She is more interested in introducing you to poetry and new poets than making her class impossible. I learned alot and I would definately take her again. Attendance/participate is 35%.
