Gives extra readings on top of the required texts. Gave a quiz on the last day of class on a long article when we didn't even finish the novel he assigned two weeks prior. Doesn't spell check his own work and speed reads through students work just to get it back to students. Too much work for an 020 course.

DO NOT TAKE! I am an honors student and had to drop his class. Very tough grader! If you are looking for an A, do not take him. B+ if you're lucky and work hard A- if you hit a jackpot but no As you have a better chance at winning the lotto than getting an A no matter how good you are at english, he said to me no one is perfect at writing so no As

I've taken Fichtelberg two times because he's such a thorough teacher. He's a nice guy who's very entertaining to listen to and encourages everyone to participate. However, he's a very tough grader, and even though he lets you rewrite papers for better grades, his suggestions get very specific and are sometimes hard to follow.

Took to fill a distribution, heavy essay writing w/tough grading, but able make corrections for every essay. Appreciates participation and takes attendance but able to miss 4 classes before any credit loss. Spark notes is good for the readings as he goes over them and you will be able to write the essays from class notes. No tests, few pop quizzes

Dr. Joseph is one of the best professors at Hofstra. But, the thing is he's hard when it comes to writing. I highly recommend him for English major because when you take him you'll be a professional writer! Do not avoid him if you want to improve garde is not everything.

He does have a lot of readings, but thoroughly goes through them in class to make sure you understand. Occasional pop quizzes, three to four papers, midterm and final. As long as you stay on top of the readings they aren't hard. He is a tough grader on papers but gives you the opportunity to revise them. wants students to do well in his class.

Dr. Fichtelberg is a sharp man, but he's a bit awkward and uncomfortably impersonal. He compensates with a quick wit. Lectures were sometimes vague or boring, with little independent student input. The syllabus could have been more interesting, and the class could have included more discussion. Tough grader on exams; papers are okay.

Most people take this class because it's required so not everyone is willing to participate in class but he does a good job in making sure people get a chance to participate. The readings he gave us (and there were a lot) were very interesting and he clearly knew the material, which helped a lot during the writing assignments

Had this class at nine a.m. three days a week, but he made it bearable. Good sense of humor. Readings are actually pretty interesting. Hard grader, but he lets you revise your work until you get a grade you're satisfied with. Try and participate, but even if you don't raise your hand he'll still call on you. I'd take him again.

I never liked English until I took this class. The texts are old but he relates them to modern day. He likes students who participate because it shows you actually read. Grades tough but you can revise an essay 100 times until you get the grade you want. Recommend to anyone.

Take him. I dare you. He's difficult and very meticulous. I knew this before taking him, however I wanted to challenge my English major self. I worked my butt off knowing he was going to literally dissect my essays. But when I walked out with a good grade, that was the first time a good grade actually meant something. Go for the challenge.

Extremely intelligent and witty man. Negative comments about him are from students that view WSC as an unnecessary class that should be easy since it's required. I like that Fichtelberg made my time worth while and actually taught me something. It's a good amount of work, but it's interesting if you make effort and get into it. GREAT professor.

One of the better professors in my experience at Hofstra. Talk to him and he'll work with you. Talk to him and he will help you. His critique of my (Eng) essays helped me in my other classes. Good guy.

HORRIBLE teacher. Heâ??s so boring and an extremely hard grader. Assigns long readings every class, and gives you essay quizzes on each reading. Allows you to re-write every essay, but A LOT of work. I loved writing before this class.

One of the best professors Hofstra has to offer. Difficult and meticulous grader (you come out a better writer), but he's a fantastic lecturer. He lets you draw your own conclusions and loves class discussion. He likes to call randomly but there's no right or wrong answer as long as you make sense. At times, intimidating, but also down to earth.

Very difficult professor, but makes sense seeing as he is the chair of the English department. I would ONLY recommend taking him if you're an english major because even english majors did poorly on the essays. However, he lets you do rewrites. He is a very meticulous grader, but you come out a better writer. Be ready to be called on randomly too!

Took Prof. Fichtelberg back in 2000 for a class called "Ways of Reading Literature." A very thoughtful professor who encourage in-class participation and discussion. A very hard grader, however, who is a stickler for grammer (more so than many other Eng professors I've had). Ultimately, you come out of his class a better student.
