Comment:

I took him for my non western humanities class. The class was graded with only 4 exams. I literally wrote down almost everything he said and studied the notes and did fine on all my exams. His tests were multiple choice and were over really easy concepts we learned. He LOVES teaching this class so it made it interesting to come to class.

Comment:

He was great! No papers or homework. Just readings that he does go over in class and the exams are mc. No cumulative final. No textbook just two smaller books. Great guy and he tells jokes and makes the lectures interesting. I'd recommend and I'd take him again. I never missed his class because I enjoyed it.

He is a wonderful instructor who uses lots of stories to teach which is very helpful for me to remember information. He gets really into his lectures and uses his hands a lot to talk. You have to go to class to pass and make sure you take good notes and review them before the tests. Also be sure to do the readings.

Comment:

Professor Basom loves what he does and it shows in his lectures. He is always very energetic and gets excited over his subject material. His tests can be difficult, so make sure you take good notes in class. There is a lot of reading assigned. I didn't read very much of it, but took good notes and ended with a B.

Dr. Basom is a pretty cool professor. He's really into what he's teaching. A word of advice: You need to read. Don't be like me. I didn't read, but went to class almost every day, took pretty decent notes (so I thought, at least), and I failed. He's a good professor, but his tests are hard.

Professor Basom is a really great professor. His tests are not too bad if you study in advance but MAKE SURE YOU READ! The first couple exams didn't have too many questions about the stories you have to read but the third exam and the final were mostly literature.

I think Dr. Basom is a very nice man. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about Russia. He lectures, puts on music, and plays videos for his classes. His tests were in multiple-choice format and the questions were pretty easy. He goes over the reading in classes, so reading isn't a necessity to pass.

Professor Basom is one of the most engaging professors at UNI. He encourages questions and comments, and will listen and give feedback even if you are completely wrong. 4 tests and 1 short paper. Great class!

Must pay attention during class. I didn't do much of the readings so that is probably why the tests were difficult. It's hard to tell from notes in class what will be on the test. He knows his tests are hard.

One of my favorite classes. Go to class, take good notes, and look at them once in awhile, there's no reason you shouldn't do well. I took the honors section, which was 4 exams and a really loosely defined paper. Seriously, he's great.

Information learned in the class was interesting and thorough. Your grade will be based purely off tests that sometimes deviate away from what you are lectured on. You may hear a term over and over again thinking it will be on the exam and it won't be where a term or name heard once will be. Be prepared for a low grade.

Worst prof I've had at UNI. Doesn't clarify the complex readings at all. Goes on irrelevant tangents. Technologically inept. Memorization for exams which are made of arbitrary questions which were never mentioned in lecture and obscure in the readings. Avoid if possible.

Comment:

Basom is a really nice teacher. He gets really into his lecture and keeps class interesting. If you go to class and write down everything he says and skim the textbook and stories you should be fine. With the other comment about the movie composer, he pretty much tells you what questions like that you should know for the test.

Worst class I have ever had. I am an honors student, 3.6 GPA. This is the hardest class I've ever taken and not in a good way. Massive amount of wrote memorization required. You watch a movie he wants you to name the composer of the music. Prepare for 100+ pages per week (you MUST do this to get more than a C) of reading.

Fun and nice guy...quite funny once you get to know him. Whole grade based on 4 tests. I didn't read anything and pulled off a B in the class. just take detailed notes and try to make it to class and you'll do fine.
