He's a very nice man, but he needs to retire. He doesn't seem to care that everyone is on their laptops and not paying attention. He actually has fallen asleep in our class before. Someone get this man a nice condo in Florida so he can retire in peace.

Comment:
This class called Language Variations in American English is total crap. Not a single person pays attention, they all are on their laptops, phones or doing other homework. If you can do an internet search you can ace the tests. He gives topics for essay tests a week ahead and allows an outline. Sit in the back and you'll get an A.

Comment:
Terrible class, avoid it if you can. It's a dialects class which seems interesting and he is a total bore. I can see him being a very good professor for grad students, but he lectures constantly even though he says he's not going to and it is SO BORING. You don't need to read the books. Don't sit near the front, I got spit on multiple times.

Comment:
Structures of Modern English is the worst class I have ever taken. If you are and English Ed major do not take it. None of what you learn is applicable in the future, he even said that on the first day. The only reason I took it was because ENGL 1100 is not a requisite and I needed to take another English class. It is not worth your time or money.

Dr. J is a very intelligent guy, always willing to go the extra mile, particularly if you show an interest. He is very strange and idiosyncratic, however, and some people get turned off by that.Don't let this detract you from taking this great class

Great guy will work with you if you need help. Is very hard but also fair. If you come to clas and do what is asked on assignments you should be okay. Dont bs him with assignment he will know. He does have a temper but as long as you pay attention you should be fine.

The first few classes he babbles on and on about absolutely nothing then hands you an assignment and expects you to know what to do with it. If you ask for help all he says is to "utilize your classmates." He knows a great deal, but can't teach it.

I've had Dr Johnston for several classes now. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I've ever met. His teaching style is not appreciated by the average undergrad; however, those who are motivated and academically inclined will thoroughly enjoy him. For those pursuing a graduate education, I highly recommend him. He is an invaluable resource.

Very hard and helps you if are struggling which i did for most during this semester. Always at his office hours, rare for the English dept. Not clear about early assignment and always read the directions before the assignment you can get into trouble by not doing correctly or rushing through it. he will know if you did, be warned.

Weirdest teacher ever! Throws temper tantrums in class when things don't go his way. Easy because he gives you the test questions ahead of time. Make sure to show up to class and you will do fine.

An acquired taste. Express interest and participate and he's a great instructor and conversationalist. Don't pay attention or slack off and he'll resent it unforgivingly. Tests are always harder than the practice, and is occasionally grossly unclear. (But willing to re-explain)
