Comment:
Dr. O'Hara has some pros and many cons. Pros: solid lecturer, clear grading criteria. Cons: goes overtime every class (2.5 hour class), never replies to emails, gives feedback too late. Overall, he is a good professor but needs to be more diligent given that this is a thesis class! I would not take him again unless I had to.

Good lecturer but hard to get feedback until after you turn in the next assignment- makes it hard to adjust to what he's looking for waiting weeks for work to be returned. Final grade was a surprise since it's been over a month and he never posted exam grades. No response to calls and numerous emails. He runs over time every class. Avoid!

History of Immigration was the most interesting and woke class I've ever taken. You're graded on 2 tests, three papers, and the final, but the material is really interesting. As long as you pay attention to the lectures and read the articles, you're good to go. Definitely recommend HIST 103 for the historical perspectives requirement.

4 papers based on books, so you had to do a lot of reading, but he was a pretty fair grader. I managed to get a B and that was without putting forth much effort. His lectures can be pretty dull, but he's nice and tells you everything you need to know for the two midterms and final.

Like other history classes, this is very paper and essay based (tests are essays). The grading is fair, 3 tests, 2 papers and participation. So there's some room for forgiveness if you don't do well. He doesn't take attendance. He's a very good guy and is very enthusiastic. Knows what he's talking about.

Great professor, really enthusiastic about what he's teaching. Grading is very appropriate, two papers (20% each), two midterms (15% each), final (20%) and participation (10%). I was able to get a B in the class and I skipped quite a lot (first class of the day). He's a very good guy, his tests are essays and can be difficult. No multiple choice.

Dr. O'Hara is one of my favorite professor's during my 8th yeah in college. His lectures tell a detailed story of American history post civil war to the the late 1980's. O'Hara asks the class questions during his lecture and is willing to answer any questions his students might have. I would highly recommend taking Hist 144 with him!

Great history professor. He makes the subject interesting and is clearly passionate about the subject. An A is easily obtainable with good notes and the ability to write a structured essay. I would definitely take his class again.

Amazing professor - helpful and concise. He lectures in class but he incorporates movies when helpful. His clear love for the subject will make you want to attend his class. I wish he taught more classes a X.

Not a bad professor. I thought he graded his tests and papers a little hard. 3 tests that are all essay and 5 or 6 papers throughout the semester

SPO is great! A younger guy, extremely passionate about the subject, and is fun. Makes history interesting. I would advise taking the night class because you get a 15 minute break AND get out early the second half of the semester. 1 midterm, 1 final, participation, and 6 two page papers (easy). I would for sure take him again.

One of the best professors I have had at Xavier. Extremely intelligent, always prepared for class. Fair grader on tests and papers, but does expect effort. Has an obvious interest in what he teaches and does his best to make every lecture interesting. Would highly recommend.

Class can be boring because you take notes every single class or have a group discussion. Reading the books is a must considering you have to write papers on them. Grades consisted of: two papers, two midterms, a final, and participation. You can tell Professor O'Hara adores History, he gets easily excited talking about specific history events.

SPO is probably one of my favorite teachers at Xavier just because he is really awkward and yet a fun guy. Discussions were interesting and you HAVE to read for the class because he will call on you to respond: do not be the silent kid in the back because you won't do well speak up in his class! Papers were not that bad and he was open to meeting.

His class was interesting. The books were only relevant for papers and just take notes for the tests. You kind of have to look at history like he does, looking at the big picture while concentrating on specific events.

Do not take this class early in the morning or you will fall asleep. An easy B, but you must participate in class to get an A. Essay tests that are not graded easily, but the papers are simple. Overall, not a painful class, but not a thrill either. Agree completely with the William Shatner/Ben Stein comment.
