This class isnt a class. You sign up, keep a log, and write a couple of papers. (Submitting stuff is really weird and specific and hard.) You join a student journal on your own time and work for them a certain number of hours (42 for one credit. Just take one credit.) per week. Its about 3 hours a week, but it took up three of my weeknights.

Some of his comments contradicts to his other comments mentioned before which made it really hard to follow. Test became guessing game because it is asking the pragmatics behind what is said from his understanding and not from yours. If you try asking questions, his explanation makes no sense anyway. Study real hard and maybe you will be ok.

Dr. Manning is a great professor. I could safely say that his class is in the top 5 most interesting classes I've ever taken. Prepare to have your mind blown as he ties together concepts you never knew were related. As long as you go to class, you should be able to get a good grade.

We talked in class about the readings that had to be completed before class. It was mainly Q&A every day. There is a big project at the end of the semester that isn't explained very well. There is a lot of info that needs to be memorized up front and he expects you to know it by heart. He does know his stuff and is willing to help if you ask.

He isn't a good teacher. He expected us to already know everything so that in class he could just do Q&A. Every single class. He never taught us anything. Tests were really tricky.

Comment:
Professor Manning has quite the personality, and it's often arrogant. He wrote all the material for this class and often contradicts himself, which makes tests exceedingly difficult. He'll help you if you ask for it, but you won't feel good about it afterward. I'll never take a class from him again; the other teachers in the department are better.

Class based on online textbook that he wrote (free!) Teaches grammar diff than any other teacher and tells us that traditional way is wrong. Sometimes helpful, often confusing. Not sure how I will use his methods in editing since no one else uses them. Might be best to try a dif prof. He is a nice guy though. Approachable and available for help.

RUN AWAY. Dr Manning is a funny guy, but his class is awful. He expects you to understand instantly and will mock you if you don't. His test questions are poorly written and confusing. The textbook is not used much, but it's not much help in clarifying what we learned in class either. The class is hard; Dr. Manning's teaching style makes it worse.

Manning's class was catered only for editing minors, didn't help me one bit as a TESOL minor. He often disregarded questions students asked, even telling one student to just stop talking at one point. Did not learn anything useful. If you are a TESOL minor, AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE!

This basically teaches you how to do a developmental edit, very useful if you're going into fiction. This class teaches the theory of story-telling. I found it very useful once I wrapped my head around the abstract concepts. Some of what Manning teaches seems a bit crazy, but there is also a lot to learn from him. Hard, but rewarding.

This class is absolutely useless. Take it from anyone else. I love grammar and editing, but the concepts taught in this course did not further my editorial knowledge at all. Additionally, he makes you read a novel he wrote as part of the course, and it's entertaining but substantively horrendous.

He's one professor that changed my mind, my purpose, and my life. He's not 'easy,' but that's no knock against him--he'll work you hard, give as much as you do, and push you if you're willing to let him. He's a brilliant scholar, a dynamic analyst, and undeniably one of the best teachers-in the classroom and out-I've ever known. Don't be afraid.

Elang 410: Interesting class; taught concepts that were helpful and unique to the class; not something I could get elsewhere. It wasn't as organized as I would have liked, but it was the first time the Manning taught this course. He is happy to help and invites questions but wasn't always as easy to meet with as I'd hoped he would be.

Manning is a funny dude, and very witty. He talks really fast and would prefer that the class stays quiet while he talks. His teaching style takes some getting used to. Tests are based on his lecture supplements, don't focus too much on the text book. He is unhelpful and impatient with students. If you're a genius then you'll do fine in his class.

Dr. Manning is a good teacher, and you don't really need to use the book. However, he does tend to answer the question (somewhat derogatorily) as he THINKS you asked it, not as you really did. Still, I learned a lot and got an "A" in the class. He curves the tests, and you get 100% on homework as long as you turn it in on time.

I took syntax from Dr. Manning a couple of years back and had a blast. The class was very interesting, very clear, and he is a super witty/entertaining guy. He was always helpful during office hours. I consider him one of the best 3 teachers I have ever had, and I'm a PhD student now so I've had a lot of teachers. I love Manning!

The best part of this class was the website. When we used the textbook he would contradict it or make fun of it so I stopped reading. He often responded to questions as if he was making fun of the student. He provided the materials to study but was difficult to learn from. I would avoid taking another class from him.

He makes you feel a bit stupid when you ask questions, and tends to not answer exactly what you asked; he hears what he wants to. However, if you're persistent about what is confusing you and don't mind his cutting remarks, you learn a lot and can get an A. Curved tests help a LOT.
