Did not like this class at all. Was told this might be one of the easiest science courses offered with a lab but I'm sure my grade was salvaged by labs if not might not have passed. The lectures were confusing because we had 4 different professors. Would not take again.

I'm not interested in science at all, so this class was a struggle. I found the lectures and the textbook boring, but Prof. Kurtz seemed like a nice guy. The labs were a pain, but at least we were allowed to work in big groups. The lecture slides (which were put online) were helpful for studying. To my despair, tests weren't just multiple choice.

Such a cute little man! Very approachable. This class is great. Material can be repetitive at times, but he keeps you interested. Exams are challenging... know important concepts inside and out, and you'll do fine.

Though lectures could be boring (especially because they were early T/R-- hour and a half), if you pay attention and take notes it is easy to do well. He posts everything online so study that. I only used my book once in lab and it wasn't mandatory. Lab was exceptionally easy and usually didn't take the whole 2 hours. Overall, good professor.

He isn't awful and you can tell he knows the material very well. If you're really into earth science, you'll love the class. But, if you could care less about minerals & plate tectonics, then this class is going to be annoying. Exams are straightforward, but frustrating and if you want an A, you'll need to work hard for it. Really easy labs.

Kurtz is a great professor, and the TF's are very helpful and enthusiastic. It's astonishing how much this professor knows the material. However, I am NOT interested in the material and therefore the class has just become a burden... tests are fair but hard. Hard to stay awake in lecture, but that's probably just me. Labs are somewhat entertaining.

Professor Kurtz is a great professor. He makes the subject material easy to understand and makes the class fun too. His powerpoints make the class run a lot more smoothly. His exams are extremely fair and his relatively few homework assignments are very helpful for exams. This is my second time having him and I still love him as a professor.

Kurtz is awesome, and the class is easy. I didn't study for more than 30 minutes for each test... got an A in the class. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you don't have to study.

If you go to lectures it is an easy class. Slides are posted online, exam material almost all from slides. Makes topic interesting, clear.

Kurtz is a great lecturer. He loves to have fun in his classes and makes lecture extremely interesting (teaches off a powerpoint). He's extremely enthusiastic. Lab is ridiculously easy...scheduled for 2 hours but usually gets out an hour early and generally involves doing a worksheet. Tests are easy if you study and go to lecture.

I signed up for the class thinking that it would just be an easy A, but Professor Kurtz made the class really interesting. He's really funny and lectures are interesting because he ties in stories with facts. The tests aren't that bad if you go to lectures.

He is a very helpful professor. The class was totally enjoyable; the few hw assignments were somewhat challenging, but he was there to help. Exams were fair, grading was generous. Plus, he was a lot of fun. I highly reccomend him.

Andy Kurtz = My hero. Not only a wicked smaart guy, but also a Sox fan and hilariously quirky, (i.e. calling results of an experiment "sexy") Take any class from him you can. Tests are easy if you pay attention and study.

Real good professor. He knows how to keep people awake in his lectures and he knows how to get people interested in Earth Science. If you have the chance, go on the field trip to Woburn. He's a funny guy too....it's ironic too, cuz his name means "small" in german, and he's like 5'2" and looks like he's 12

Kurtz is a great professor in the sense that he genuinely is interested about what he's teaching. However, his tests are difficult and unless you study A LOT, an A isn't attained so easily--unless you're willing to study and make mental photocopies of the book(don't buy). But if you're ok with B-range grades, take his class--you'll learn a lot.

Don't take this for an easy A. Class is sort of interesting, but tests are impossible. You have to memorize a lot, and draw diagrams directly from the book. Also, he tests you on things he might have mentioned once in class. I studied a lot + got a C.

Subject matter interesting, though Kurtz gets a bit too excited about soil, rocks, and chemistry. Tests are rediculously easy to do poorly on, despite studying. Memorization is key. Not too keen on it, in the end, though Kurtz is a nice guy.

Lectures are BORING. Kurtz is a nice guy, but he doesn't explain concepts that well. To fully understand the material, go to his office hours. He's much better one-on-one. Tests are challenging, but not impossible. STUDY DIAGRAMS!
