Comment:
Dr Hsu is a good professor and knowledgeable in the subject, but his lectures are unclear. He has a hard time explaining things concisely and directly addressing questions asked by students. He often has to take a step back and examine the board to check his work, even though he is copying off of his own notes. So.. read the textbook to understand.

He's a decent professor. Very quiet though so if you want to hear him you need to sit in the front couple rows. His lectures were okay, I wish we had covered more though, I feel like we didn't cover too much new material. His tests were all open notes, so have all your class examples and homework problems handy and you will do just fine.

I agree with what others have said below. Dr. Hsu is one of the most professional teachers I have ever had. His work ethic, intelligence, and attention to detail are top-notch. Pay attention to all sample calculations. Know homework inside and out and answer all questions on the study guides. He gives you all the tools you need to get an A.

Dr. Hsu has a work ethic which is second to none. Assignments are graded promptly and he has an excellent overall understanding of the material. Most of the course is consistent with the text book thus reading it is very helpful for exams. Also he has all sorts of cool stories to tell if you can get him to talk about them.

Hsu is a great professor that provides every chance for success. He provides notes for each topic, and is able to relate the material to real-life well. Most homework questions are his own, however some can be found in book (and in turn cramster). Grades lab reports with a lot of scrutiny.

dr. hsu is a good prof, but my biggest complaint is he is very concerned with the "bell shaped curve," and he wants the breakdown of his class grades to follow it. make sure from the beginning he feels that you fit in the top of the bell or above, if you are below he will make up his mind and you will fail, even it the curve is created artificially

Hsu, makes Materials a lot harder than it should be. His PhD. level of understanding will just confuse you, I learned more from reading the book than his lectures. Labs are good, but lecture is a complete waste of time because he has a hard time explaining things. Read the book, get study partners, do the HW and labs and you will be ok.

This is coming from the person who got the highest grade in the class. So, don't think that my opinion is based on my grade. I aced the course. But, thats just because I studied ahead of time and had knowledge of Materials. Very nice person but, horrible teacher. Horrible way of teaching through labs. Does not go by book. Makes easiest stuff hard!

I took this as a refresher. Hsu is extremely smart, and has a hard time coming down from the Ph.D level to explain Materials Science to sophmores. He got a Ph.D in Materials and I think he understands it better than anyone. Consequently you learn from his leqtures but I learned alot more when I took this class at a J.C. before I transfered.

I can't believe people think he is hard to understand. Try sitting somewhere besides the back row if you can't hear him, morons. If you can't understand his accent, which isn't bad at all, then you should stop sitting on your couch all day playing games and get out into the real world more often. That's why no one takes this site too seriously, cause freaking retards can come on and say whatever they want. He is very funny and helpful with questions. I would recommend you take classes from him.

Dr. Hsu is a great teacher. I didn't pass thermo with another instructor, but it made sense when Dr. Hsu taught it. He has an accent but it doesn't get in the way of his teaching.

This guy is pretty rad, the class is totally your own thing you kind of have to teach yourself but he isn't a tough grader and is really lenient about turning things in late and such. Easy manditory class for CE majors.

He is very nice and is willing to help with anything you have questions about. I am doing well in his class, and the class is my "easy" class becasue you don't really have to put much effort into your work to do well.
