Passed License first-time in spite of this man, not because. He said I would never pass, he said a lot of other harmful things as well. He enjoyed playing God. He was loved by many, but there was another side and if you got on that side he was ruthless. The worst person I have ever had the misfortune of crossing paths with.

Grad 19 years ago-Capt. Hard was the most challenging prof there. He was demanding & brutal on M/n that lacked attention to detail. Working in a field where I use Navrules daily, I am glad I did not have a hack teaching me my tools of trade. As I look at my USMMA diploma,it is sweeter knowing I earned my A grade from him, not handed out like some.

Best professor at KP. Hard was not only an expert in subject material, he taught the importance of attention to detail to groom and educate professionals in the industry. Those with poor comments in my opinion simply shouldn't of graduated.

As a 1992 Deck graduate, I honestly think this guy was one of the best. Served me well......went on to sail with MSC and never once was at odds with any Captain I had sailed with concerning application of the Rules of the Road. He must of done something right! Thanks Captain

It's a difficult subject, but he presents it clearly. You need a 90% to pass on license exam, so he's hard on you in class. That seems reasonable to me. If you have trouble, CAPT Hard WILL help you. I don't see what other people are complaining about. Unless they're slackers and just want to be able to cuise through everything.

First day of AdvNav class, Douggy goes off on this hour-long monologue about how "this class is... not easy," "this class is... difficult," "you will have a... rough time." Anything but say "hard," 'cause I dunno, maybe he has this weird thing against using the word "hard" to describe anything he teaches. Yet its the perfect word. 70% of kids fail.

I'm amazed that he's still around. I had him for Introductory Nautical Science back in 1973, and he was a pain in the ass back then. He's part of the reason I became an engineer and sail as a chief engineer today, so thanks, Doug.

I found it was better to say "I don't know" then to try to answer a question just so I wouldn't be ridiculed in front of the entire class because I haven't devoted my life to studying rules that can summed up as go to starboard and Rule 2 is solve-all. There was no practical application whatsoever
