Quizzes are based on in-class discussions, if you come to him with questions on assignments he's happy to clarify, etc. You don't need to do all the readings to pass, just take notes and talk sometimes. If you're proactive, he's pretty accommodating. Took some time to get used to his style, but now I think he's great! Don't get why ppl hate him :/

It took me a bit to get to know his style and sense of humor, but now I know how awesome he is! He expects a lot from his students, which is really rewarding. I think that's why some people don't like him though.

Kind of full of himself, very big ego. Not very kind. But it is not the worst class ever, it can be interesting stuff. Orlin just talks a lot and it is kind of easy to zone out. Not a lot of tests, but the ones there are are random and hard and he is pretty unfair on. Doesn't teach anything on the tests. Not super helpful. Essays are hard, read.

Comment:
Orlins class is ok. The class itself can be a little boring however the material can be interesting. Orlin has a sort of snobby persona, which can be harsh and critical of papers and such. Not super supportive nor encouraging nor understanding. Lots of reading- insane amount actually. And writing. But it's ok for the most part. Participation is key

I loved the essay prompts and the reading materials. I didn't like the research paper short writing assignments. They got in the way of my time and efficiency.

Eric is hands down the worst professor I have ever had. Eric is a little child. He always has very simple analysis and due to this you will not learn anything in this class except how to please him.

Gives you so much reading that you wonder if he realizes you have other classes to go to or that he realizes that taking his Cleopatra class doesn't mean we are majoring in Classics. Grades your argument in your papers based on if he agrees rather than if you are making a sound argument. Terrible teacher and I don't know anyone that likes his class

Really loves the sound of his own voice. If you're thesis doesn't agree with his opinion on the topic then you won't do well. Talk to him about each major writing assignment because what he says in class and what the syllabus say aren't always the same.

Eric may have his off moments but he is an extremely dedicated teacher. He rarely strays from his syllabus, he answers all questions in depth then looks up the answers he does not know and emails them to you later, he is also just extremely helpful when you are confused. It looks like some people just received bad grades and need to get over it.

An alright class. I found my interest in ancient Greece to lessen over the course of the semester, even though I adored it prior to taking this class. Not to difficult though.

This class is dumb and you do not learn anything. It is supposed to be a writing class but you argue in class and he is not helpful at all. I turned my final paper into him multiple times for review, and used the feedback he gave me and still gave me and 80%. That paper was at least an A. He gets really pissy and likes to screw students over

I learned absolutely nothing in his class. Mostly it was a frustrating mix of ridiculous prompts and poor feedback. If he doesn't like you don't count on an A. Half the time it seems like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Avoid if possible

probably the worst professor I have ever had. he has favorites and if you fall out of his graces your grade will reflect it. I received my first B from him and it was for a 100-level class. Also, his prompts are middle-schoolesque and rarely relate to Classics. Avoid this teacher at all costs

Easy to interact with. Allows for all view points to be heard. Essays are straight foreword, but exams not entirely straight forward and sometimes focus on secondary/obscure material that isn't given a lot of attention in class.

I think Orlin is a fantastic professor. He is very straight forward, although he can follow tangents he is very easy to understand and very well suited to teach history. THe last thing he is, is compartmentalizing, one only needs to prompt him in your direction of thought and he will explain and clarify for you.
