Once you understand that she wants you to give her own opinion back to her she is easy. She has a friendly demeanor but the only thing I learned from her was how to pass her classes.

Comment:

Friendly, helpful, and the most noted scholar of Austen literature on the continent. Amazing opportunity to study with her. Dr. Ray is extremely generous with her time and encouragement for students who are willing to work really hard.

Comment:

Professor Ray is generally a friendly person, she is quick to share details of her life and likes to get to know her students. She was very clear and went through all the readings very thoroughly, but her lectures were slow and not very interesting as a result. Her tests were tough, but not unfair.

Comment:

Although a brilliant and personable woman, her teaching style lacks passion. She rarely relates texts to their outside influences, and I found her classes a bit drab. Her tests can be difficult, but can be easily managed if one takes the time to speak with her. She is willing to work with students who are struggling.

Comment:

One of the best professors that I have ever had. She is astoundingly intelligent and made me genuinely excited to learn. She's very open to talking with students about their writing, so if you're struggling, talk with her and, chances are, you'll do better on the next exam. By the way, her exams are great preparation for the SCE.

god awful woman. if you dont write in the way that she wants you will be lucky to get a c. i spent half of my semester trying to figure her out. smart lady, but knows it - feels no guilt in failing students over 1 point or making ppl feel dumb. i would never recommend her. she has favorites, and if you're not one.... watch out!!

I took two of Ray's classes, a senior sem on Jane Austen and another on Austen in film. While Ray is a very tough professor, she is also one of the most informative. I learned early on is to pay close attention and participate in class, she appreciates that. And she was a fair grader who made me work for the grade I wanted.

Dr. Ray is owns an incisive mind, is thoroughly adroit in her research, and close reads as well as anyone I've studied with. UCCS is lucky to have such a quicksilver mind teaching its students. I especially liked her readings of Milton. Take her if you're a serious student who loves literature.

I thought Dr. Ray was very knowledgable. She is very harsh on grading, taking 50 points off if you use the wrong part of a text to support your paper (this happened to me, so NO, I'm not a favorite), BUT you can learn a lot from her & that's nothing to shrug off!

President's Teaching Scholar MY AUNT FANNY! She is a horrible teacher. I had her right after Pellow and she gave me poor grades and offered no help. She is pretentious and egotistical. She picked on me in front of the entire class. Ray is hard to list

30 yrs of teaching has made Ray arrogant/complacent/lazy. No out of class writing allowed-entire grade based on 4 in-class essays & quizzes. Ray reads test anxiety as laziness-provides no alternatives for success. Plays faves/ridicules rest. Harsh/sarcastic grader (From an otherwise 4.0 student).
