Dr. Clarke is such an amazing professor that when I found this site I had to rate her even though I took her class in the 1990's. I am a better person and writer because I had the opportunity to take courses from Marlene!

SHE IS THE BEST! absolutely take Clarke, she will make your personal statement a dream come true! She taught me so much, still in contact with her today, she cares and her class is really fun. I found myself wanting to go every day and couldn't wait for it to be UWP again. But she is hard, and she doesn't give "A"'s easily, must truly work hard.

Professor Clarke is amazing! She really knows what makes a good writer and how style plays into that. She is a hard grader, but she wants her students to succeed. However, I'll admit, you may need to already be a good writer coming into this class to receive a good grade.

Office hours are good and all but it should NOT be mandatory in order to get an A. I'm a Chem major and I went through the "toughest" courses with good grades except THIS one because Marlene is simply not clear on what she expects from you. Imagine being asked to write papers and then get them arbitrarily graded. Yup... this is the class.

Yes Professor Clarke's class is hard, but I believe she is fair in her grading. Sometimes she is unclear about what she expects from a paper. But if you go to her many office hours or send her an email, she takes her time to go into further detail with you. If you want to be challenged and learn how to be a better writer I suggest taking her class.

I have never before found the urge to rate a professor until now. Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, do NOT take this woman's class if you care the tiniest bit about your GPA. She's a tough grader and she will give you NO MERCY on your papers. I fcking kid you not.

I have never taken a more harshly graded class in my 4 years at UC Davis. Avoid this teacher if you need a good GPA to get into a desired program. Instructor should stick to teaching English and not science related courses. She is not even close to qualified for this course. You have been warned!

Professor Marlene Clark is horrendous. She doesn't tell you what you need to write about, doesn't want you to learn, but rather wants to make all science students feel like crap and like they can't write. She never meets you outside of class and really makes no effort to help you at all. She is a horrible teacher.

She is the hardest grader I have ever encountered in five years. Her expectations are I don't know where because I am an honor student and no matter how hard I worked, nothing was ever good enough. She definitely plays favorites and if she doesn't like you, you will know. Take the class, its a good prep, but with someone else!!

Professor Clarke is super nice, it's hard not to appreciate her criticism. Yes the class is pretty challenging but for once I didn't wonder why I didn't get a better grade on an assignment. She provides feedback that is actually helpful and she geniunely wants you to do well. Very fun class.

She is definitely a tough grader, and sometimes, she does not tell you what she exactly wants in a paper. Take this class if you have the time to do re-write and see her during OH about drafts. She does teach you a lot of grammar and writing, so definitely worth the work.

I don't know about these other comments-I LOVED her! Tough, challenging, but really wants you to learn. Paper topics were broad, & I got to write 2 papers on my career, which means the papers practically wrote themselves! Also the only person in my 5 years of college to actually teach some grammar. 101 was a great class & she was a great teacher.

Prof. Clarke does have a lot of expectations for her students, so expect a challenging class. She allows you to re-write one essay per week as long as you consult with her about the essay beforehand. You can do well in the class if you put the work in. It was honestly more work than I thought it'd be, but I really enjoyed the class

Difficult grader. High expectations. Frustrated me. But I've learned so much from her. Take her to be challenged and to learn. Be prepared to work your ass off. Go to office hours, she's genuinely helpful . I got a B- and I was glad I passed.

She is the most difficult and unreasonable grader there is (and this is coming from someone who has aced every single English class I've taken at Davis). She is unclear about what she wants, and punishes students for HER lack of clarity. Furthermore, she is not helpful, and too readily judges students and factors this prejudice into her grading.
