Comment:
His grading policies are ambiguous at best. While he has a sense of humor, he is very disorganized, often appears late to class, and shouldn't be taken by beginning or intermediate writers. His specialization in poetry often monopolizes the class discussions and his courses typically provide little value outside the classroom besides transriptual.

Professor Garland is a really tough grader. He never establishes or tells you exactly what he is looking for in papers. When you ask him what you need to change about your writing/papers he is super confusing about it. I had to go to the writing center multiple times for papers in order to do well. He appreciates it if you go to the writing center.

He genuine cares about what he is teaching but is a extremely hard grader. I have yet to get over a B and go to the Writing Center and see tutors. Avoid if possible. You also loss points on your final grade for the the days you miss.

He was kind of disorganized and you never really knew what was going on. He was funny at times. However all he did was talk about politics which was not interesting to me. He is not an easy grader. I saw constant tutors and asked for help from him and still did not do well. I did not learn a single thing from this class.

Great professor for poetry seminar. Always had fun in class with discussion. Easy A if you show interests in what you write. UWEC has amazing creative writing staff.

Extremely helpful and experienced poet. Reading through the negative comments, especially the most recent, I can see freshmen being butthurt because they couldn't accept the reality of contemporary creative writing.

Terrible Professor. Full of himself. Published poet or not, his poetry is boring just like he is. He doesn't like rhyme, which is stupid. Most people in my class enjoyed my poems, but he didn't because his way is highway. Take diff prof, def.

He's a professor that has good intentions and is passionate about teaching, but he is an incredibly hard grader when it comes to the five papers you have to do for this class. He is very unclear when it comes to the day to day assignments he gives. He expects upper level work from a 100 level class which is ridiculous. Avoid if possible.

If taking him for 110, be ready to do more work than the for other 110 professors. We wrote five papers and he grades very hard. I have yet to receive over a B. He is very interesting to listen to and teaches the material well, but it's very hard to get an A in this class.

He is a nice guy, but an EXTREMELY tough grader. I went to the writing center 2+ times for every paper, and was praised for how well my papers were. However, I got a B- on every paper no matter how hard I tried. My GPA was ruined because of the class. If you can take another professor for English 110, do.

He assigns 5 papers for the semester, which make up the grade. The longest was 10-12 pages, the other 4 were 3-5 pages. We did 3 drafts of each paper with 2 peer review sessions. He also made himself available if you wanted to talk to him about your paper. If you're a decent writer you'll do well in his class. I'd recommended him for 110.

While the assigments and readings may be frusterating at times, Max Garland knows what he is talking about and is a very great professor. Taking his class was a privilege. He is a published poet and I recommend looking up some of his pieces even if you do not take his class. He is a very admireable and talented man. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. He rambles for the first few hours of the class and then tries to cram everything in at the end (3 Hr. Night Class). He grades based on his opinion and not on the work you create. Awful teacher. I would recommend avoiding him if you can.

Decent class. Boring though. Papers aren't difficult, but he is a pretty hard grader. I got Bs and As on my papers, though, so not impossible. Rarely keeps you the whole time when its a 2hr session. He is nice and willing to help, but wants you to figure things out for yourself. I recommend taking him.

Those who say he is boring are referring to his slowish speech and monotone voice. Deal with it! This man knows his poetry and he expects you to try hard. Don't turn in BS poems, and you'll be okay. Nights can get a bit long if you're not that into workshopping/the poet you read that week. There's a lot to learn from Garland!

English 110 isn't supposed to be a fun-- but I really like this professor. He is a great guy and willing to help you, even if he does grade a little hard. Class was never boring, essays were interesting and we had plenty of time to write them. It might not be easy to get an A, but you will know that you have really earned it.

He is a very nice guy, but he grades extremely hard. Pretty much impossible to get an A because the only thing he grades on are the 5 papers you write through the semester. He only gives 3 or 4 A's on every paper. We get homework that he does not grade, and you can't miss more than 4 classes or ur grade goes down. Overall a nice but difficult guy

I learned absolutley nothing in this class basically you get to write 4 papers and thats it. You really don't even need to be there except that if you miss more than a day it affects your grade. Your grade is determined the first day you walk into class. Hes unorgansized and boring. If you need a good GPA your first semester this is not your prof!
