US LIT 1930-PRESENT: Reading can be intensive, but this course is not difficult if you put in the work! Essay exams are graded on attention to detail and insightfulness, quizzes (all free response) are easy if reading is done, and lectures are great as they are mostly open discussions sessions and sometimes consist of film adaptation analysis.

The only people who rate chavkin poorly is due to them missing class frequently. He's awesome!! Easy reads and always discuss during class. Quizzes over readings are easy too. Recommend to anyone who is looking for a non-demanding professor. Plus final is a take home exam allowing you to finish earlier and leave

Had him for Crit Theory and US Lit he's a chill professor. Gives a lot of extra credit through attendance and grades fairly easy. Discussion based and guidelines are pretty simple. Cool professor to talk to when you have questions and sends reminders of assignments/hw/or quizzes coming up the day before. Would take again.

Prof Chavkin is honestly a great professor. He gives you extra credit in attendance which is a whole 5 points of your average if you attend everyday. Ex: 8590 Quizzes over readings but are fairly easy. Easy grader. Overall chill class since it's mostly discussion just stay on top of readings and you'll do good. Would take again!

He's boring. But he lets you know straight up what he wants in essays and how his tests will be. He does expect you to ready and gives quizzes almost every class. On the bright side, he let me class out 20 minutes early every day

Chavkin's not the most engaging teacher, and you have to be really interested in literature to get the most out of him. If you show up and do your work well, you'll get an A. Chavkin's a rally intelligent scholar, there's a lot of fascinating information he'll impart to you. His monotone delivery doesn't match the importance of what he's saying.

Professor Chavkins class was much easier than other upper level English classes I've taken, but he is pretty boring. The readings are easy and one of the books I actually read in highschool. If you read the books, and show up to class, and study the vocabulary, you would have to be lazy or unintelligent not to pass. The paper guidelines are to a T!

Show up or fail. I got 90s on my tests but missed a lot of classes. When I told the professor I have two disabled parents and was their primary caregiver he didn't care, telling me if I missed one more class I'd fail. This in a class where we mostly watch movies, wow.

Chavkin is very droll, tending to lecture without allowing students to add their input until the very end of class. It is obvious that this professor is passionate about this course work, but it would help a lot if he had a way of showing it that wasn't so boring.

A ton of reading obviously, but most of the material was at least somewhat interesting. Dr. Chavkin always gave students an opportunity to give their own opinion and gave plenty of extra credit. Tests are really easy IF you read, they're basically just passages from stories, no critical thinking involved. Do the extra credit paper.

He rambled on and the tests were mostly quotes from the book. Very difficult to remember the conversations between each character in the many books we had to read. His speech was never clear and many people in this class had trouble understanding him.

He was definitely not my favorite but he is very passionate about his work. He would often ramble on and on for days about one text and we would fall behind on the syllabus. It was difficult for him to stick to the syllabus. He grades fairly easy but his handwriting is kind of hard to read.

He is the smartest professor in the English Department. He really knows all about the writers. The best part of the class is the way he connects the film version of the play to the written version. You have to read the material and attend the class. Definitely do the extra credit paper. He will help you if you ask questions.

He really isn't that bad. I actually feel sorry for him because I don't think he knows how hard he is to understand and the information is useful. it's all on the test. don't try to get away with sparknotes. if you read the stories before class it really makes the lectures 100% easier to follow.

Chavkin is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does'nt prepare a powerpoint of even lectures for that matter. He prints out a paper and reads off of it in a monotone voice to a class of over 300. He does not even bother to lift his head up to make eye contact with his audience.
