Class woodwinds. I think Dr. West concentrates too much on making us play the instruments instead of teaching us how to teach them. He does it get annoyed easily but is definitely willing to help with any problem you may have. Nice, but not does not cut corners. He knows EVERYTHING about woodwinds though. Fun teacher, hard mandatory class.

Dr. West is brilliant. You can ask him anything about music and will get an answer right away. However, his immense knowledge can lead to fumbling and tangents built on tangents. He has trouble deciding what is truly applicable and really important knowledge. Great teacher, great musician, and will do what it takes to help you learn.

Dr West's task is huge--to teach us five woodwinds in two semesters well enough for us to be able to teach children. His head is like an encyclopedia, and he is more than willing to share his knowledge. But he has little patience for people who try to get by with doing nothing. Notebook is great!

It's been remarkable working with Dr. Austin and Dr. West--they compliment each other's assets and the combination provides a great learning experience. West admits that he is the lesser conductor, but I think that makes him try harder to help us understand. People who don't prepare do annoy him.

He expects his students to learn new instruments way too fast with almost no information. He isn't clear in his lecture or his expectations. I have found that if you ask for help, he will work with you until the problem's fixed or you're out of the class.

Dr. West is a treasure to the Richmond community. He was a Fulbright scholar, and is one of the most prolific and widely respected recording musicians in the area. VCU should consider itself lucky to have someone of his caliber in the department.
